A splendid, thorough, scholarly monograph which does justice to one of Poussin's greatest, most intriguing paintings. The author was a curator of nineteenth century paintings at the Wallace Collection which owns the work. He tracks the work's origins, explores its meaning, composition and sources, and follows its history. He provides full notes and bibliography and excerpts evolving commentary upon it.
The numerous plates are superb including clear details and a 10" high by 13 ¼ " fold out. Any admirer could not ask for anything more. |
