3.0 out of 5 stars Domination and Submission in a refurbished Medieval Castle, July 5, 2009

This review is from: Dance of Submission Pb (Paperback)
I had originally given up finding this book for a decent price, so as a result I wound up reading the second book in this series "Slave Auction". Unfortunately I think the fact that I feel the second book is superior is one of the reasons for the lower rating of this book. As far as I can tell this is Lisette Ashton's first novel in the world of erotica, so I tried to keep that in consideration while reading this, even though the second novel is a major improvement.

As a first effort this book is fairly decent. "Dance of Submission" takes place on an island off the coast of the U.K. in a medieval castle owned by a dominatrix named McGivern. The book opens with a meeting with two other main characters Frankie and Simon who apparently have gotten into money issues with McGivern. In order to settle the issue a bet is proposed, the winner gains ownership of the castle (a dominatrix' paradise!). Each of them must dominate a chosen person by the group in order to win the bet. This is the catalyst to all kinds of jaded desires, which is precisely why one would read this book!

As a story it was put together fairly well. I did want to find out what would happen towards the end, but the highlight for this was the sex scenes. The domination, spanking and so forth were very well crafted. Some people may find them a bit on the more brutal side as one of the people is rather unwilling at first and I know some people have an issue with forced submission. However, the well written sex scenes dwarfed the storyline and the book felt a little slower because of that. Luckily the second one doesn't fall into this trap at all. The other issue I had with this is that our main characters feel a little two dimensional. They're barely fleshed out at all, though this might have been done on purpose for future installments. Alas, I couldn't fully get into the motivations of the characters. In the end that was the main reason I couldn't fully immerse myself in this book.

This is surely an admirable first effort for Ashton, but I am glad I started with the second book. This was more like reading some facts to fill in the gaps of the better story, so on that level I still enjoyed it. If this is your first experience with Ashton and you had the same problems I did with the book, then don't stop here keep going, I don't think you'll be disappointed. "Dance of Submission" is filled primarily with m/f scenes, but there are quite a few f/f aspects as well. There is very little m/m, but it is alluded to and not focused during any sex scenes, for those who are adverse to such things.
