The storyline was very engaging. Extraordinary suspense and very well developed characters. The descriptions of the surroundings and the ambience are probably some of the best I have ever read in mystery books. Uncanny ability to transport the reader to the scene into the plot. My only dissapointment was the end felt rush. With his writing talent, I would had expected a fenomenal psychological and trial courtroom drama ("Pressumed Inoccent" type). I am looking forward to read more of Mr. Conners's work. Definitely a great mistery writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept the pages turning, July 9, 2004
This review is from: Dancehall (Paperback)
I bought this book while I was camping in Lake Placid. I have to admit that I was I was intrigued and surprised by the ending. Throughout the entire book I thought one character murdered the young girl and it was not until the end that it all came together. Good pacing and definately worth your time.

I read this book in 1983 and never forgot how much I loved it. It's a good, solid, story. I like how the characters were written, because I could almost picture their expressions and actions. I know that all stories are meant to do that, but not all are this engaging. The author sets scenes and atmosphere well, especially out on the lake at night. You could feel the stillness and the cold, and almost hear the lapping of the water against the boat. There is another thing I like about reading this book. This might sound odd, but the story has a 1930s or 1940s feel for me. The story doesn't suggest that era, I think it's just something I personally got from the characters' names and dialogue. This would be a good choice for a mystery fan that is more discriminating than the average reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, September 12, 2009

I borrowed "Dancehall" several years ago, and remembered how much I enjoyed it. The story takes place in the Adirondacks. Not that far from my home town of Albany. Which was another reason I bought the book this time. I could relate to it's locale. The story is not so much a "who done it", but why was an innocent young girl murdered in the first place. It's a story of jealously, betrayal, and wrongly accused. I highly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Dancehall, June 9, 2010

I read this book many years ago and enjoyed it very much. It is my understanding a movie based on the book is underway. I ordered a copy of the book on May 8, 2010 via Amazon.com to give as a gift and as of today (6/9/10) it has not been received. The vendor has been notified, but in my opinion this is very poor service. I have ordered through Amazon.com previously and some items have been received within the week they were ordered. I am hoping there will be a satisfactory solution. Maybe the mailman is reading it before it gets delivered.

4.0 out of 5 stars Opposition to the death penalty, July 14, 2006
This review is from: Dancehall (Paperback)
This is a riveting murder mystery. Contrary to a previous review, Mr. Conner did not make an error in timing. He was showing the error of re-instating the death penalty. The book was written when this was a very hot topic up here. The man in the book was minutes away from execution when the true killer confesses! If NY had the death penalty an innocent man would have died!! It really is a great book with a truly unexpected ending.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get by the glaring error, August 19, 2004
By
Tom Bruce (East Moriches, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dancehall (Paperback)
The book begins with and then builds to the same climax: An execution by electric chair in New York State in 1986. The problem: New York State executions were suspended from 1977 to 1995. The author should have known this: He was a former FBI agent and he lives in New York State, where pro and anti execution stances were hot political issues of the time. Otherwise, the story is terrific with twists and turns that should keep the reader spellbound until the very end. In fact, it's hard to elaborate on the plot without ruining the suprises within. It's a well crafted tale and perfect beach reading. But, everytime the author returns to discuss the state held executions, he looses me. I became focused on this glaring error instead of the story he so expertly weaves. Why didn't he set this story in a state that had executions? Why didn't he set this story at a time when executions were allowed in New York State? Why did he muddy the water with a tale based around a total impossibility? If you can get by this editorial faux pas, then this is a story I would give four stars. But, I couldn't get by it; it ruined for me what would have been a fine book.
