Editorial Reviews

Dancer and the Moon is Blackmore s Night 8th studio album. Despite Ritchie Blackmore s past as a guitar player in Deep Purple and Rainbow, he is
now in another stage of his musical life, concentrating on modern Folk, Renaissance and Progressive Rock music. Besides Ritche s incredible talent as a
guitar player, the other selling point for Blackmore s Night is vocalist Candice Night, the beautiful wife of Ritchie Blackmore who could be described as a younger, and folkier, version of Stevie Nicks.

Deluxe Edition comes with DVD featuring videos for "Dancer And The Moon," "The Moon is Shining (Somewhere Over The Sea)" and album EPK!

Ritchie Blackmore and his wife Candice Night (Blackmore's Night) dish out great contemporary folk music to my surprise in this new CD release titled 'Dancer & The Moon' (13 tracks). Guitar maestro Ritchie Blackmore shows off his guitar skills in instrumental tracks "Minstrels In The Hall", "Galliard" (wonderful orchestral base track, melody & also great violin playing) & "Carry On... Jon" (great bluesy guitar) as well as in the tracks "The Ashgrove" (great guitar finger pick-up) & "The Spinners's Tale". Candice Night provides great vocals as in the tracks "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" & "Temple Of The King".

There are two eastern/indian music sound influenced tracks in "Lady In Black" & the title track "Dancer & The Moon" (both have a very 'rich' enticing sound).

Stand-outs/gems/my favourites are "Galliard" (instrumental), "The Ashgrove", "The Spinner's Tale" & the closing track "Carry On... Jon" (insrumental).

On overall, Blackmore's Night does not disappoint in this new CD 'Dancer & The Moon': great contemporary folk music and wonderful performance & production. A highly recommended CD listening.

As always, Blackmore's Night pulls out another fantastic studio album, with a good mix of various styles & sounds that fans have come to expect from such an eclectic band. This album gets a little further away from the Medieval/Renaissance styling of their earlier work & has a more Eastern European feel to it. Also, we tend to hear more guitar from Ritchie on this album & less mandolin as on previous albums. This is by no means a complaint! The man is a genius regardless of the instrument his strings are attached to & I like that each of their albums has different sounds to it yet still remains consistently "Blackmore's Night". I honestly can't pick a favorite track, but several stand out for me, particularly "Carry On...Jon", a heart-wrenching guitar piece dedicated to Ritchie's former Deep Purple band mate Jon Lord who passed away last year. The song is truly a spiritual experience, overflowing with 40 years worth of friendship & conflict, joy & pain, frustration & respect, & honor & grief. It brings tears to my eyes listening to it. As for Candice - phenomenal as always! I hate how so many reviewers (primarily DP & BR fans who can't let go) get down on Candi. She is an amazing performer, talented songstress & beautiful lyricist, not to mention a very sweet person. & obviously Ritchie thinks so too or else, being the perfectionist he is, he wouldn't still be with her after 20+ years, not to mention recording & touring with her. But, I digress. I have noticed that on the last couple BN albums Candi's voice has taken on a fuller, more sultry tone (vocal lessons, maybe???) which has also given the songs as a whole a richer sound. Whether doing a traditional folk song, a love ballad, or a revival of a Rainbow classic, she pulls it off beautifully! Love her, love Ritchie, love the band, love this album! Another winner, guys! Thank you so very much! :)

I have nearly all of Blackmore's Night compilations and some I like more than others, my favorites being "Shadow of the Moon," "Under a Violet Moon, "Village Lantern" and now..."Dancer and the Moon" (my least favorite being "Secret Voyage"). This latest from Ex Deep Purple/Rainbow guitar virtuoso Ritchie Blackmore came out of the gate a little wooden, but by the time song three rolled around--bam!, the glow of the album began to take shape and did not cease until the very end. Being a long-time guitarist myself, I can really appreciate why Ritchie felt the need to move from Hard Rock to renaissance music as I too have moved from playing mostly heavy metal to a more folkish/Celtic finger-picking style because it is often more complex and gratifying. Similarly, like Ritchie, I sill shred with the best of em' and you too can hear his rock-roots shine through in many of his Blackmore's Night songs.

On that note, Blackmore usually likes to remake some of his old Rainbow songs with Candice, infusing a Renaissance flair and, being a die-hard Rainbow fan, I usually prefer the originals. However, "Dancer and the Moon's" rendition of "The Temple of the King" seemed like it was made specifically for this new album and to be frank--I think prefer this song over the original 1975 version (which is saying a lot!). Since I did not care for the first two songs on "Dancer and the Moon," one may ask why then I rated the album an overall "5?" The answer is because the remaining tunes more than makes up for a slow start, so I consider the lesser songs "bonus material" in the wrong place.

The music is on the CD is beyond words. It will be on my IPOD playlist for a long time. I see others have given some great reviews on Dancer and the Moon.

I bought the deluxe edition. The DVD has the making of Dancer and the Moon, along with four bonus acoustic videos.

The making of Dancer and the Moon is about 28 minutes. Richie and Candice go through each song, and how they came about.

The acoustic videos are just with Richie and Candice. The videos are a little less than two minutes each, but are out of this world. They are: The Spinners Tale, Somewhere Over the Sea/Moon Shining, The Ashgrove, and Queen for a Day. These are not on the making of Dancer and the Moon.

This is one great album.
