I will confess that I have heard just over 3/4 of this CD and it was nothing less than outstanding listening. I immediatly purchased it. The music is what I feel classical music is meant to be. It relaxes you, promotes genuine thought, feelings, and quite simply it is as peaceful as new music gets. I highly reccomend it. Somehow the music reminded me of Samual Barber and Beethoven both. I think you will like it.

Beautiful Music for an Endearing Film,

Bill Whelan's orchestral soundtrack for "Dancing At Lughnasa" is simply gorgeous. The music aptly conveys the feelings of longing, alienation, sadness, and uncertainty, as well as times of joyful exuberance, as revealed by the film's endearing characters. I find that the music also perfectly suggests the transition of the winding-down of summer and the coming of autumn, just as the film's characters also face a severe change of season in their personal lives. Even without the wonderful film, the music that Bill Whelan has created here stands on its own as a cohesive, moving, emotive work. Highly recommended!

Why was the Homes of Donegal featured in the story when the story takes place in 1936 and the song wasn't written until 1956. How can the character hate something that hasn't happened yet? Just wondering...

Non-distinctive and lacks creativity.,

The first five songs are so slow and similar that you think it is one long song. Spend your money on distinctive Celtic music with Enya, Clannad, and Marie Brennan.

but I did see the movie twice, and hardly noticed the music as I was watching. (I usually notice these things) The songs that were sung by the characters during the movie were much more beautiful in my opinion--the family rendition of "Down by the Sally Gardens", the short, sweet songs sung by Gery as he woos Chrissie, and especially Maggie's rich voice singing "Gypsy play your violin"...those are the songs that I noticed and loved. I would recommend buying the dvd instead of getting the soundtrack, because not only do you get those extra songs, (and the dancing that goes with it), you get a very good movie.
