Editorial Reviews

Review

"No one in a position of leadership can afford to ignore the issues raised in the book." (Continuing Higher Education Review)

"Higher education must respond quickly to the opportunities made possible by the digital revolution. This book cogently addresses the complex issues facing universities and gives helpful insights into the different uses and limits of technology. An important resource for university leaders." (Gilbert R. Whitaker, Jr., dean, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, Rice University)

"Readers should welcome this opportunity to receive guidance from a distinguished group of authors who have experience and insights into productive uses of the information technologies in higher education. Both the authors and the issues they address are very well chosen." (David Roselle, president, University of Delaware)

"If you're in higher education, the authors' persuasive pictures of your present circumstances and probable future(s) will tantalize and terrify you. You may not like this book's message, but you'd better read it anyway." (Dan Langenberg, chancellor, University System of Maryland)

"Clearly, the time has come for us to engage in a systematic and objective consideration of how these technologies will ultimately affect the quality of the teachers we prepare and the students they serve. Richard Katz and Associates have given us much to think about." (TESE)

From the Inside Flap

A Publication of EDUCAUSESponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLPToday's colleges and universities face a new environment in which information technology is rapidly becoming the preferred mode of learning. As distance education, distributed learning, virtual campuses, and digital libraries generate greater interest among prospective students, academic institutions can no longer rely on traditional methods to survive and prosper. In this collection of essays, seven highly respected institutional, association, and financial leaders examine the formidable challenges facing all types of campuses. The authors address such themes as dealing with competition from for-profit providers; building a powerful technological infrastructure on campus; changing restrictive organizational and administrative structures to reward, encourage, and manage technological innovation; and finding the money to fund these kinds of transformations. Although such profound changes are wrenching for many academic institutions, each contributor offers guidance based on the unwavering belief that higher education can successfully confront these challenges to renew itself.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre book, July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dancing with the Devil: Information Technology and the New Competition in Higher Education (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series) (Paperback)
This book is a collection of essays. While the authors are indeed quite credible, the content leaves much to be desired. The book is long on problems, and short on solutions. Moreover, difficult topics, such as strategic outsourcing, surviving information warfare, designing a new staffing profile, choosing which private sector practices to adopt and which to avoid, and issues of institutional leadership are mostly ignored. This isn't a bad book; I just didn't learn anything new from it.
