Badmarsh & Shri are that rarest of dance outfits--they're actually better live than on wax. That might be because DJ-programmer Badmarsh and instrumentalist Shri bring another vocalist and percussionist on the road with them, but it's more likely that their sound--an exceedingly organic blend of dance-floor beats and Indian sounds (tabla, flute)--really comes alive in a club. None of that should imply that Dancing Drums is a sterile listen; rather, the enveloping sounds, the funky bass lines, and the use of a lot of sound loops make the album a relaxing experience--but one with a beat, too. Unlike Asian Dub Foundation, another group that brings the sounds and rhythms of the Asian subcontinent into the clubs, Badmarsh & Shri aren't out to dazzle you--sometimes you even get the feeling that they think that would be too easy--but if you listen deeply, you'll be moved just the same. --Randy Silver

This album is more refined and developed then Badmarsh's EP release "Differences". I like this CD a lot it is one of my favorite CDs of all the Asian electronic artists. In fact it is one of my favorite jungle CDs. If you like jungle along the lines of LTJ Bukem and artists from Moving Shadow, Audio Coutre, Good Looking, and Looking Good records then this album is for you. The use of tabla on this album is amazing. Badmarsh in my mind is the leader of the so call Asian Underground not Talvin Singh.

This is exactly what i'm looking for in music. I have always loved the sound of the various South Asian percussion instruments that they use in this album, and have various CDs of Tabla and Raga music that I love for this reason. Additionally, I'm an electronica fan, with special interest in music with thick textures. This is that...excellent combination of natural sounds and layering that you can feel. They have a unique take on the South Asian style of vocal percussion (something that has always fascinated me) in 130 steps. If you like drum and bass this is an excellent interesting outpocketing of the genre. Perhaps what I like best about this is that the music is much more original and textured than the other forms of "Asian Underground", techno layered on Asian sounds, usually South Asian and Indian.

This music is really worth listening to, i heard it breifly on KCMU, for the first time, and was really impressed. This is categorized as "asian underground beat", and i would say that is an appropriate description, overall great tunes.

Badmarsh & Shri were part of the wave of Indian-influenced electronic music that swept the late 90s. On their debut, DANCING DRUMS, you can hear the tablas forming part of the breakbeats. The title track, for example, takes a quick bass and blends it into the percussion, fusing the two smoothly, even as the sitar starts rocking out. "The Asian Detective" is more mellow, with a healthy dose of Delhi noir. The bass on "Gharana" is quite something, while "130 Steps" has the rat-a-tat rhythmic chanting. Oddly enough, their attempt at pop with "The Air I Breathe" isn't as compelling as the strings on "Lament." Good overall, though it doesn't do enough to distinguish itself.

I have purchased Badmarsh's Differences EP cd, and this work is nothing compared to that CD. This just has no excitement, it sounds like a children's music CD instead of a Drum n' Bass CD which is what it claims to be. You probably will not be satisfied with this if you are looking for the Badmarsh sound, but if you want to purchase this, I must recommend that you get Badmarsh's Differences EP. This CD just does not compare.
