PreSchool-K—In this picture book, children are asked to guess who's dancing across a spread by looking at the clues in the artwork and listening to the rhymes. A dancing bear makes a "Thumpity! Thumpity!" noise with its feet, while the steps of ladybugs sound more like, "Tippity! Tippity!" Appearing alongside a row of small footprints is: "Creepity! Creepity!/Lots of purple feet!/Who is dancing/that creepity beat?" A turn of the page reveals an illustration of a smiling caterpillar and the answer: "Caterpillar's dancing/on creepity feet./Creepity! Creepity!/Happy feet!" Brown uses hand-painted paper collage and primary shapes to create all of the happy dancers. A surprise pairing of partners ends this cheerful story and acts as a motivator to get children moving. Consistently in step with newcomer Craig's toe-tapping narrative, Brown's cut-paper collages herald a fresh direction for his artwork. Recalling the simple yet sophisticated collage art of Leo Lionni (to whom Brown dedicates the book) and Eric Carle, the pictures introduce a cheerful menagerie of animals composed of basic shapes cut from hand-painted papers in an array of colors, textures, and patterns that recall everything from corrugated cardboard to exotic grasses. Celebrating movement and sound, the guessing-game story hints at the identity of each creature, initially seen retreating from the page, leaving footprints behind.

 

Spontaneous, onomatopoeic verses ask questions that are answered with a page turn: “Tippity! Tippity!/ Little black feet!/ Who is dancing that tippity beat?” leads into a spread that reveals ladybugs cavorting among leaves and dappled orange flowers. An elephant's beat is “stompity,” duck’s is “slappity,” a caterpillar's is “creepity,” and a bear's is “thumpity.” In a satisfying finale, kids wearing clothing that mimics the appearance of the various animals demonstrate their own dancing feet. Fluid repetition and snappy rhythm make this a natural for reading aloud—noisily.  (May, 2010)

More About the Author

Lindsey Craig grew up in a dancing and singing family. She often wakes up tapping her foot and hears music in everyday things, from honking cars to thrumming crickets. She has written a musical, and her children's play, CINDERELLA'S SHAKESPEARE, is performed nationwide. DANCING FEET! is her first foray into children's books. Her next picture book, also illustrated by Marc Brown, will be available from Knopf in the coming year. Lindsey lives with her husband and children on a small island in Washington State.

This rhythmical, stepping out, herd of happy little feet will get your little ones moving. If you have an expressive voice and a passel of little ones to entertain, you can almost count on several happy little dancers. The rhyming sequence is very singsong and can easily be adapted to music. The artwork is very bright and exudes a happy aura. Just picture four colorful ducks . . .

This snappy and fast-paced children's read by LIndsey Craig will get your little ones bouncing and happy. The concepts are easy & just silly enough to be funny with lots of room for improvising. Whether you like the big brown bear's THUMPITY moves or the caterpillar's many purple dancing feet, you and your kids will enjoy this book over & over again.

Great collage images by the illustrator Marc Brown perfectly match the dancers.

My daughter loves this book and asks me to read it to her multiple times per day. It has a great rhythm to it and is fun to read. The illustrations are fabulous. I have given this book as a gift to many people who are having kids (or have kids) and have gotten great feedback from them about it as well.
