Book Description

August 1, 2006
Finnish silence is one thing, but the silence in Kik Halonen's house is poison. Orphaned as infants, Kik and her sister, Liisa, were taken in by their icy Halonen grandparents and grew up in northern Minnesota without knowing about their parents or even the people who raised them. Eloquently and evocatively written, intricately woven, this is a must-read for Finnish Americans

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a really good read!, June 3, 2007
This review is from: The Dancing Finn (Perfect Paperback)
Ever since I started tracing my Finnish ancestors, I've been reading books with the general "solving family mysteries." This book is so authentic in its descriptions of both Finn-American life, life "back across the seas" and the emotional price of silence and a reluctance to probe...I can't tell you how many times I could identify with the young heroine as she plowed ahead, being a family sleuth where no one else wanted to know or understand the immigrant experience. It will NOT be passed along...this book is one of my permanent collection....and I hope for sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Battle with Silence., April 26, 2007
This review is from: The Dancing Finn (Perfect Paperback)
What do you get when you combine gifted writing with a good story? A book worth reading whether you are a Finn or not. Chamberlin tells the story of orphaned Kik and her quest to know who she is in a family ruled by an amorphous and authoritarian character called "Silence." Silence wants everyone to hide behind a Finnish mask--you really do not need to know who you are, just behave and be quiet, is Silence's insidious mantra. But, without questions and answers how do you find out who you are? In a battle of wills that spans two decades, Kik takes on "Silence." Who wins? Therein lies Chamberlin's compelling tale. Sam Bradley, Ph.D.
