This is a very good book for primary grade teachers, but upper-grade teachers can use much of the information provided. This book shows teachers how writers develop, the purposes for writing, and how to make your classroom into a productive writing haven. It is recommended by Learning Network specialists in our district. It is easy to read and easy to implement the strategies taught here. I feel it is a very authentic view of what we as teachers want our students to do in the area of writing.

Dancing with the Pen is to the writing process as Reading for Life is to the reading process. This easy to read and understand book is a MUST read for pre-service teachers, first year teachers and veteran teachers. Dancing with the Pen explicitly describes the writing process of children along with color photos of student writing samples in the various stages of writing. A perfect companion piece to Reading for Life ( how to take running records and understand the reading process. As a Literacy coach, I am using both texts with my teachers this year as a basis for professional development.
