Finally!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dancing With St Peter (Audio CD)
Finally, Phil Mogg has found the key! After years of trying to make the magic happen again with Schenker and Way, Phil Mogg has found a core of three young talented musicians to Rock to the new millenium. Don't get me wrong. I love Schenker and Way and grew up in the 70's kicking ... to UFO, but as these guys grew apart, so did their writing talents as a team. Kollman on guitarhits home with his techniques that are very similar to Schenker and actually a little bit of Trower as well. This guy loves to crank and hit the wah wah pedal to perfection. And the new bass player will give the Big Boy bassist a definite run for their money. I highly recomend this CD for those who A) Love the "Rock Bottom" days of UFO and B) those who love well produced music. Keep it up Phil from one old fart rocker to another!!!

Kiss Michael Schenker goodbye!,

My opinion this is the best thing Phil Moog has ever done without Schenker. Jeff Kollman is awesome. This CD sounds like a mix of early Ufo(Mick Bolton) and Ufo with Schenker. The rythym section is outstanding. Phil hasn't sounded this good since Lights Out. Seems to Me is the best love ballad since Try Me. Every song is great. My other favorites are Driven, Dancing with St Peter and Beautiful Friend. If Phil and Jeff keep producing music like this I don't care if there is another Ufo.

Be Interesting To See Where $ign of 4 go....,

This review is from: Dancing With St Peter (Audio CD)
While not as lyrically or sonically sound as UFO-Sharks, this release from frontman Phil Mogg backed by a band of fresh blood definitely falls into its own category. UFO fans will be pleased by 'Driven', 'Overload' and 'Song Keeps Coming'. All will be astounded and pleasantly surprised by 'Clap Hands', a Tom Waits cover that is served up with a slow build and willing fervor. The highlight of the album has to be 'Las Meadows Sanctum Divine' which lyrically reminds one that life is short and the good times must be LIVED to be enjoyed, if not remembered. If they make a go of it, $ign of 4 will prove an interesting band to watch.

I love this record. Sonically the record is, surprisingly, quite different from any of the UFO albums. The songwriting is more eclectic as well. Instrumentally, the drummer Shane Gaalaas is truly outstanding, pushing the legendary Phil Mogg in new directions vocally. Guitarist Jeff Kollman and bassist Jimmy Curtain are just terrific as well, Kollman's riffs possess a lush crunchiness and a masterful rhythmic and dynamic sensibility. I love the stripped down and sparkling production on the record as well, and prefer it to some of the recent UFO records. I really love Phil Mogg in this context, and I think that both his voice and delivery have a refreshed clarity and confidence with this group. I hope they make more records together.

i've been a big ufo fan since 1976 when i first heard "no heavy petting" and have owned everything they put out since then.when they reunited with michael schenker in the mid ninties i was very excited but after "walk on water" they seemed bored and i've always felt that phil mogg's lyrics were forced and stale from "covenant" going forward. i guess that's why it took me so long to pick this album up. how surprised was i to hear how good it is! i think jeff kollman is one of the best guitarists in rock at this moment, and the rhythym section is awesome as well! all of the songs sound fresh and energetic and i think phil's lyrics are as good as anything he's done since ufo's glory days. i think vinnie moore is a great guitarist and he did an excellent job on the studio remakes on the "showtime" DVD, but i think if ufo continues to carry on making records and touring, they should consider hiring jeff kollman as their lead guitarist! i recommend this highly!

I came across this CD thanks to the "others who bought this also bought this" section of Amazon; while looking at UFO's "You are here" and MSG's "Arachnophobia" CDs!!! And I LOVE IT!!! Fellow hardcore UFO fans might want to throw Holy water on me but I personally think this is better than ANY of the new UFO CDs except for "Walk On Water" (Certainly better than either of the Vinnie Moore UFO CDs, make me wonder why Phil didn't just ask Jeff to join UFO!!). I also like it better than half of MSG's work!!! In fact it made me go out and buy a couple of Jeff Kollman's CDs AND belatedly realized he was the guitarist on one of the Moog/Way and one of the Glenn Hughes CDs I already had.But I noticed that none of the reviews mentioned my personal favorite song - "Las Meadows Sanctum Divine"!! Though it is good to see my other faves, "Falling Down", "Afterglow" and "Overload" are mentioned. And I have to say I LOVE "Clap hands"...I don't mind different as long as it's as good as this!! So, as you may have guessed, I REALLY like this CD, would liked to have seen them live and wish the 4 of them would get together and record a 2nd CD!!!!

QUALITY ROCK !,
This review is from: Dancing With St Peter (Audio CD)
Those who swear by 70ies and 80ies hard rock find it hard to dig the albums that artists from that period are throwing on the market now (e.g. Iommi, Judas Priest ...)But here's an exception: Phil Mogg remains true to the values of originality and good songwriting, whatever the fashions are. Seems like these guys are in it for the music and money comes second. The combination Mogg-Kollman is making all the magic happen, because the last two UFO-albums (Mogg-Schenker)can't match up with "Chocolate Box" and "Dancing with St.-Peter". This album is serious stuff and to be consumed without moderation !

A little different from moog/way but good,

This review is from: Dancing With St Peter (Audio CD)
This cd is a little different than the moog way cd's or ufo it still rocks but the guitar playing is leaning towards a little more towards jazz/fusion/blues than even more than the moog way cd's. My favorites on it are Overlord, Clap Hands..the songs takes off after a while..despite what you hear on the samples page, bad on bad, beautiful friend, and falling down. All songs are good and the cd does end up being a little different from the samples they of it at tracks.

It's good but not a masterpiece,

I don't think Phil Mogg's Sign Of 4 (side project or not?) is that different from either later UFO or the Mogg/Way albums as some claim. When it comes to songs like "Overload", "Driven" and "Falling down", I believe they all could have been on UFO's "Covenant" or Mogg/Way's "Chocolate box" (for example) without too many people thinking that it was odd or misplaced. I really like this "Dancing with st. Peter" album a lot and almost every tune is enjoyable. The title track may be one of the best with Phil Mogg's absolute precence. And if you don't expect to hear a real masterpiece, I believe you'll be rather satisfied with this album. And by the way, guitar player Kollman also plays guitar on Glenn Hughes latest release. "Songs in the key of rock" - check it out please! For those interested, I heard that UFO will release a new album in february 2004. The line up is Phil Mogg, Pete Way, Jason Bonham and Vinnie Moore

Phil maturing with a different edge,
By
This review is from: Dancing With St Peter (Audio CD)
I was pleased to see that Phil and guitarist Jeff Kollman decided to unite once again, as their collaboration on "Chocolate Box" from a few years eariler produced some great, modern-feel classic rock. To no surprise, some of "Dancing with St. Peter" sounds like "Chocolate Box," as songs such as Overload and Driven kick of the album in the same classic mid-tempo vein. However, Mogg and Kollman decide to open this one up a bit more to the more delicate possibilities of rock (i.e. acoustic guitars and congas).Perhaps I'm somewhat perplexed by the direction some of these songs have taken, and cannot fully appreciate what is for sure a more muture release than their previous. When it's all sung and done, the duo have to be applauded for taking on such out-of-the-boxers like Tom Wait's Clap Hands and the acoustic ballad Beautiful Friend. One thing that does become apparent on the mid-paced rockers is that Phil's vocal phrasing/rhyme scheme is becoming somewhat predictable. Small complaint, however, as these are some of the most ambitious/well rounded lyrics by Mogg to be found and Kollman gives us plenty of tasty Billy Gibbons-style licks. "Dancing with St. Peter" no doubt displays plenty of style and brains, it just takes a while for some old schoolers to digest. |
