From the Author

Machine quilting is the most exciting part of the quilt making process. When all three layers are sewn together the surface comes to life! In years past all the quilting was done by hand, and it took forever to finish even a small piece.

After many years of machine work, I've polished up a system where the quilting can be beautifully done on any home sewing machine. In this book, I begin with a gallery of my machine quilted original quilts; then move on to a step by step description of how it is done. At the end of the book are problem solving pages to help with challenges that may come your way.

With practice and a little dedication on your part, you may also be successful at machine quilting. Throughout the book I compare the quilting process to dancing. As I work on a new quilt my spirits soar as I "dance" across the surface with my machine, and bring it to life. Quilting is more than the physical process of stitching the layers together for warmth; it is artistic as well. When stitched, the surface becomes sculptured with highlights and shadows. An interesting texture will begin to cover the surface that will complement the design of the quilt top. I find this process so exciting that I wanted to share the process with quilters everywhere.

It is time to stop sending your quilts out to be quilted. Learn to do it yourself, it is worth the effort. Other important features of the book include sections on: supplies, using decorative thread, preparation for quilting, how to dance on your quilt, and 5 projects for beginners to advanced level quilters. There is something in this book for every person that wants to machine quilt.

Please give my book a try, then come and dance with me!

More About the Author

Ann Fahl, quilt artist, tried all the fiber arts before learning about quilt making. In 1978, she signed up for a quilting class. Quilt making has been an important part of her life ever since. She realized that there had been a quilter inside, just waiting to come out!

Quilting enables Ann to combine the things she loves; color, fabric and sewing. She finds the process of designing, fabricating, and the stitching to be an enjoyable creative experience. Her work has been accepted in art shows and quilt competitions across the US. Making quilts has become her life's passion and a career for a lifetime.

Ann never intended on becoming an author. After designing, selling and teaching about her work, a book seemed the next logical step. Her youngest son, was away at college, it was a good time to write "Coloring with Thread" a book about machine embroidery. The entire process of writing was so challenging and successful, that there will be another new book from C&T to follow in 2010! The title is "Dancing with Thread." If you like quilting, this next book will be for you, it's about a free spirited approach to machine quilting.

Recently Ann has self published a 28 page booklet "Creating Beautiful Bias Binding." Presently available on her website www.AnnFahl.com. New in spring of 2011, a brand new self published book: 'A Black and White Tale.' This will feature 35 of her original quilts, in full color with verse by Jacquie Scuitto, the Quilt Muse. This is a book for fans of Ann's work. The story ls about the antics of her black and white cat named Oreo. 48 pages in full color.

Ann is the daughter of two classically trained musicians; the oldest of 3 sisters, a cat lover, gardener, family genealogist, a wife and mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Color dancing, May 9, 2010

This review is from: Dancing with Thread: Your Guide to Free-Motion Quilting (Paperback)
In this book Ann Fahl has generously shared her wealth of knowledge.
Beginning with an inspirational gallery of work we are led from the basics of supplies, tools and threads, through the complexities of getting the best from your sewing machine to the point at which the "Color Dances" begin. The book ends with projects of varying intricacy and a troubleshooting guide.

All in all a comprehensive book that manages to instil good practice, inspires experimentation and is still a good read!
This book is staying very close to my machine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dancing With Thread makes me want to dance with thread, July 21, 2010
This review is from: Dancing with Thread: Your Guide to Free-Motion Quilting (Paperback)
Dancing with Thread by Ann Fahl really simplified machine quilting for me, and makes me want to dance with my machine! Her needle selection guidelines have simplified needle purchases for me and, I'm not having to look through my selection of needles every time I do embroidery on my machine. When I've read about machine embroidery before, the books were very serious, and Fahl lightens the subject and makes it fun to do! I hightly recommend this book to anyone who is learning to do free-motion, or to give the experienced stitcher great tips!
