More information on measurements,

I wasn't able to find any information online about the diameter on these strainers so I finally just went to ace hardware and measured them myself in the store. I thought I'd share in case other want to know as well:The smallest one is 2 1/4 inch in diameter. The inner opening where the basket dips is 3/4 inch in diameter. The medium size is 2 3/4 inch in diameter. The inner basket diameter is about 1 inch. The largest one is 4 1/2 inch in diameter. The inner diameter is about 2 inch. --My drain is 2 1/4 inches in diameter and I found the large one works perfectly. I tried the small and medium ones too but is slid around too much in the drain--

I ordered this one in from Amazon after not having too much luck with Hair Stopper - Drain Protector by Evriholder Products.Basically what I've discovered is the holes in the rubber ones are either too few to let enough water down the drain (once they catch the least bit of hair) ... or too many and too large and let the hair down the drain. The stainless mesh ones fill the bill. Plenty of open space for the water to get through. Yet the mesh is fine enough to stop just about anything. Mine even catches any soap residue that isn't fully dissolved. I was concerned that, without a seal, some hair would slip under the outer rim and directly into the drain. I can't tell for sure, but that doesn't seem to be happening. Plus it's a much easier clean-up compared to the Evriholder mentioned above. I've also got the larger version in the kitchen sink now and it's doing it's job there as well. It's a wonder these things don't come standard issue, as they do a much better job that the usual old-school devices that come in sinks and tubs. Anyway, try this one first. After trying several of the rubber ones, I found stainless steel mesh is really the way to go. UPDATE [February, 2011]: Ok, a year and a half in, and I STILL say this one's a winner. It still performs just as I first described. Plus I discovered it is durn easy to clean when it starts getting soap build-up ... I just toss it into the washer with a load of towels and it comes out spit-shine clean. Look no further.

I have long, thick hair. Pulling it off of my comb each time I shower and setting it aside to throw away was helping my drain stay clear, but I know some hair gets through. I bought this to help catch what I don't put to the side.It fits into my bathtub drain just fine. Mesh is very small to catch everything, and it did. I will probably have to clean the thing out after every shower, but that's okay. If any soap gets caught up a quick rinse under hot water and a bit of rubbing at the mesh with thumb and forefinger clean it off. If it starts to build up a soap scum I spray it with Tilex and hit with an old toothbrush. Ta da. It's a good, cheap and preventative measure that means less snaking the pipes and less standing water in the tub.

This product does its job in the shower. I have no real complaints except that I do have to rinse it out almost every day or at least every other day, but that is how I know it works in catching everything. Especially my long hair.

I'd tried several plastic drain strainers and had lost hope of finding one that worked. They might catch some hair, but then I'd pull them out of the drain to clean and find more hair there -- and know, as the drain speed starting slowing, that yet more had gotten into the plumbing. To add insult to injury, the slow drain would cause water to accumulate during a shower and then the plastic strainers would FLOAT in the water, worthlessly. This drain strainer is a little fine-mesh metal basket that catches everything AND stays in the drain rather than floating. I had my plumbing cleared just after I began using it, and a couple months later now I've seen no evidence of hair slipping under/through it or any hint of a slowing drain. I clean it after each use; it takes (literally) ten seconds to clear out the hair with a tissue and clean the strainer with soap while I wash my hands. Exceeded all expectations!

its is a great product, but it does stop everything and requires constant cleaning so as not to stop water flow. it IS easy to clean and stops what i needed it to stop (hairs), so I cant complain.

We have very old pipes that clog easily and are very expensive to clean. The previous drain cover we had was the plastic type that sits on top of the tub stopper, but all that one did was float around the tub as the water level rose during my shower. This stays put and catches *everything*. Yes, it requires regular cleaning, but that means that all that stuff didn't go down your drain (a tissue or piece of toilet paper each morning after showering is all it needs).

With three very-long-haired people in my family and old plumbing, I spent a lot of time snaking clogged shower drains. This is a perfect "why didn't they think of this sooner" device, like wheels on a suitcase.

What's great about this thing is that you forget it's there until the water stops draining as fast. You pop this thing out, scoop out the hair, and plop it back in the drain. It catches nearly everything but it's nearly invisible too. Three cheers for Danco!

Hassle free.,
This review is from: Danco 88821 2-3/4-Inch Tub Mesh Strainer, Stainless (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought a plastic mesh before this one.It would clog and then start floating in the water and let the hair pass through. It wouldn't stay in place. But, this product completely solved the problem. It wouldn't float and would catch even the fine hairs and dirt. I thought, this product might rust and create stains on the bath tub. It hasn't left any stains. It's almost a year since I bought it. I do clean it whenever I take shower. The soap scum also goes away with a powerful jet of water. |
