This review is from: Dandelion Wine (Audio CD)
Here's the short and sweet: this is amazing lo-fi groove-rock and psychadelica. Fans of bands like the Out Crowd or Brian Jonestown Massacre will eat it up. Very highly recommended.
... and the long and blathering: I came to this band via the internet, both from recommendations by a member of the BJM and from the Volta Sound's minimalist, but generous, web site. Listening to some of their downloads was enough to make me buy. And I certainly don't regret it - in fact, I'll be buying their other disk(s) as soon as possible. It's all about the sound, natch. The first three tracks are acoustic, and blend hypnotic guitar with other lo-fi instruments (was that a mellow trombone break? yes, and it worked! How 'bout some flute? yup, and it also works). The longer songs (Faustrock and the amazing cover of Matt Hollywood's Miss June '75, with a slight update) see the band pluggin in for some killer spacerock and psychadelica. Although the songs don't seem complicated, there is a lot more there, there, and you find yourself returning to the groove time after time. The vocals are also first-rate, featuring some nice harmonies on the acoustic numbers. If you like the BJM, especially in Anton's more mellow moods, you'll be all over this disk; it's not a rager, but it builds a slow groove that gets into your mind and won't let go. One of my favorite purchases of this year. As for the rating, I am always conflicted about how to go. I sorta think 5-stars should be reserved for bona fide classics, and it's a bit too early to tell with Dandelion Wine. Still, I love this disk, and that was enough to give it a five.
