Book Description

High-Octane Adventure That Will Deepen Your Faith

Sacrifice. Perseverance. Courage. Leadership. These are the qualities that make a man great, that lift him from an ordinary existence into an extraordinary one.

Through sixteen true stories of daring and adventure, Danger Calling challenges you to discover if you are living out God's game plan for your life. From the depths of the sea to the top of Mount Everest and everywhere in between, this high-adrenaline ride confronts you with provocative questions such as:

Would you stop to help a climber in the Death Zone on Everest?
What is your source of strength in a crisis?
Could you lead others into battle knowing some will die?
To what challenge is God summoning you right now?
How much are you willing to risk?

Each story will thrill you. Each set of questions will challenge you to discover who you are, where you stand in your faith, and whether God is calling you to experience greater risks and deeper meaning. Whether you tackle this journey on your own or use Danger Calling as a guidebook for your group of fellow adventurers, you'll find your life and faith transformed.

"A book about life, danger, faith and adventure . . . in fact, all that makes living so wonderful!"--Bear Grylls, host of Man vs. Wild

"Even if you never scale Mount Everest, tiptoe across an avalanche-prone mountain slope, battle a raging forest fire, or sail solo around the world, this book spurs you toward the greatest adventure of them all--a life lived in the center of God's will for his glory. It is an antidote to a complacent faith."--Jim Daly, president, Focus on the Family

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger Calling December 13, 2010
Format:Paperback
Becoming a man is about much more than age. It's about sacrifice, perseverance, courage, and leadership.

DANGER CALLING contains sixteen true life stories about daring and adventure. Stories that take you from shark attacks to mountain climbing and beyond. The stories are very well written, engaging and held my interest, but some of them are extremely gory and explicit.

After reading the stories, there is a section of group questions for you to answer with a group of your friends, out loud, in a discussion. Then there is a section for you to answer privately, with plenty of lines for you to write your answers.

Some thoughts included in this book are:

> Would you be able to help a blind climber in the Death Zone on Mt. Everest?
> What is your source of strength in a crisis?
> Could you lead others into battle knowing some will die?
> To What challenge is God summoning you right now?
> How much are you willing to risk?

This book will have you doing some deep thinking about your life and you would react in adverse situations. And it will teach you some biblical truths along the way.

I have a teenage son greatly interested in survival so when I was offered the chance to review this book for Revell I jumped at it. It would be an excellent gift for your adventurer this Christmas season (or at any time). I highly recommend this book for any young man.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars . . . No Easy Answers December 23, 2010
Format:Paperback
"Danger Calling" speaks to me as a male. I love the outdoors, love adventure, love risk, nature, sacrifice, and perseverance. These topics are often bypassed in the Christian world, and this causes a disconnect between many men and the church.

This book is immensely readable, delivered in short chapters that chronicle true-life accounts of death and life. From the heights of Everest to the humid horrors of the jungle, James Lund and Peb Jackson give us quick, hard-hitting scenarios that would put anyone's faith to the test. Some of the stories end in heroism and victory, others in tragedy, but each one presents dilemmas without easy answers. Each chapter concludes with thoughts and questions to consider, and this is one of the book's best features. These bits are honest, raw, and thought-provoking. They are not black-and-white sermonettes, but moments of true soul-searching--perfect for individuals, Bible studies, and small-group ministries.

Although I would've loved more detail about some of the stories in this book, I felt the authors caught the heart of each tale with pinpoint accuracy and fine writing skill. It's no wonder that Bear, from the TV show "Man vs. Wild," gives "Danger Calling" an endorsement. It's a book of man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. himself. Ultimately, it's a book of man meeting God in the toughest of circumstances.

4.0 out of 5 stars fast paced and thought provoking February 6, 2012
By James
Format:Paperback
This book is 214 pages made up of 16 short stories divided into four sections each having a main theme. Section one is named "Sacrifice", section two ""Perseverance", section three "Courage", and section four "Leadership".
The book is fast paced and thought provoking, written in an easy to read and vivid style that helps you to see in your mind the beauty and danger in each story. The stories ranged from mountain climbing expeditions to sea voyages and even military operations. They spanned in date from around 1914 all the way up to around 2008.
The book is set up with questions and reflections at the end of each story (It seems like everyone is doing this kind of thing now a days.). I usually don't read the questions at the end of each chapter in books like this that are set up for small group study but I found that many (not all) of the questions were challenging and helpful in some way.
Some of the stories that are contained in this book are well known and you may have already read or watched a movie or documentary giving a fuller account of the story but even if this is true the stories are well worth reading again.
What I did notice, and this is true of a lot of books like this, is that the scriptures given are sometimes pulled out of context or stretched to fit the stories better. This is a failure in my opinion. It's far better to just not quote scripture than to stretch the text but the stories and questions (most of the questions) aren't really based in any text of scripture so it was easy for me to just ignore those things that seemed a bit forced. I always say "reading a book is like eating fish. Eat the meat and spit out the bones".
In the end this was a great book easy to read and really quite thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pause to consider January 16, 2011
Format:Paperback
Danger Calling is the type of spiritual study that allows you to privately consider the answer to the question "What would you do?" If you're the type of person who doesn't want or like to express your feelings in a group setting, Danger Calling allows you to consider, even prepare for, a situation that could very well happen to you. As someone who has lived through, and been taught by, an intense outdoor accident I highly recommend this book. It will prepare you, spiritually and emotionally, for a situation that you may face one day.
