James Oliver Curwood was an early 20th century writer who lived in Michigan, where he published several novels a year. Curwood loved the outdoors and is known for his conservation efforts. Saskatchewan is a cold and icy place with the city of Prince Albert the last outpost of civilization. Howland felt the romantic and adventurous nature of this forbidding landscape. His dreams lay in the frozen lands at the top of the earth.
