From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8?A gripping sequel to Terror at the Zoo and Horror at the Haunted House (both Cobblehill, 1992). Ellen and her little brother Corey both go to a fair, but separately with their own friends. Ellen is made a bit uneasy by a fortune-teller's cryptic warning, but doesn't realize that her sibling is in trouble, or that he is alone (the boy he is with gets sick and goes home). After witnessing a series of pickpocketing incidents, Corey tries to report the thieves, but one of them traps him on the "River of Fear" ride and he is knocked unconscious. It's not until later that his family starts to wonder why he hasn't been brought home by his friend's mother. After a phone call clears up the misunderstanding, Ellen, guided by the fortune-teller and her own ESP, fights the robber and rescues her brother. The tension mounts deliciously as readers follow Ellen and Corey through their day. They are likable characters for whom youngsters will feel great sympathy. Lovers of suspense and ESP themes will be satisfied with this novel.?Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

Gr. 5-8. Ellen and Corey, encountered last in
Horror at the Haunted House (1992), are back, this time sharing a thrill-a-minute adventure set at a county fair. When she visits the Great Sybil to have her fortune told, Ellen becomes the recipient of a bizarre spirit message indicating that her younger brother, Corey, is in danger. The prophecy is true--Corey has spotted a pickpocket working the fairground, and in his zeal to catch the culprit, he has placed himself in grave danger. After him are two very nasty men, who have no qualms about seeing him, and Ellen, dead. Kehret draws the fairground backdrop with an almost visual precision, and her fast-paced, suspenseful plot includes several scary setups in which kids fight grown-ups for their lives. These components, plus a pair of enthusiastic, heroic, quite likable young protagonists, add up to a contemporary kid's nightmare/heroic dream-come-true that won't stay on the shelf for long.
