Night Owls Review - TOP PICK To Dare the Duke of Dangerfield

Caitlin was about to lose her birthright and family home. Her no account father had gambled away the estate. She had only one recourse, she would make a wager with the new owner. Harlow Telford, Duke of Dangerfield had the prize he'd wanted for so long. Finally, his half-brother would have his due. But Harlow was intrigued by Caitlin and decided that he'd have her too. He accepted her dare but never contemplated that he might lose, if not the bet then maybe his heart.

What a fun and enjoyable read! Caitlin and Harlow are fantastic. They play off each other and provide not only humor but sensuality to an intriguing plot. Harlan's friends also add to the story. Although it does take a bit more serious turn in the last part of the book, this was an entertaining read throughout. Great dialogue and sizzling chemistry round out this delightful story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, enjoyable novella February 7, 2012

Lady Caitlin Southall can not believe that her home, her mothers home which is being held in a trust for her, was lost in a card game. She becomes even more frustrated when she learns the most notorious rake and her neighbor, Harlow Telford, Duke of Dangerfield is the one that won her home and will not return it like a gentleman when he learns of her situation. Oh no. Caitlin's temper gets the best of her and she challenges Harlow to the best of three events to see who wins the home--but her loss will come with her losing herself in his bed.

Harlow is troubled when he hears that the home he won was being held in a trust but he has his own personal reasons for needing to own Caitlins home and he has no intention of losing the bet. He knows what must happen after Caitlin loses and he hopes it will be a win/win situation for them both but in the process he needs to trump the lovely lady in cards, baking and horse racing all while trying to hold on to his heart.

This was my first experience reading Bronwen Evans and I really enjoyed it. The story worked well with the length, about half the length of a full length novel, and I didn't feel like the romance was rushed. There is a back story of our couple knowing each other previously and that always helps move a novella along for me. I really enjoyed Caitlin and her passion for securing her future and her boldness but who I really enjoyed was Harlow. I don't really want to give away much of the storyline as it came as a pleasant surprise, but I was really surprised at the decenty of him underneath his rakish persona. Watching the sparks fly between this couple was fun and leads to some very steamy encounters until they finally seal the deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyed it March 29, 2012

Caitlin is one gutsy lady. I loved her chin-up bravery. Harlow is a dispicable rake. He's also really hot. For Caitlin, but not in an honorable way.

I have to say that I enjoyed this read. BUT, this is what I would tell the author:

1-Scene with his mistress on his lap as he tells Caitlin he wants her, ICK!!!
2-Redeeming a rake takes more initial suggestions of his goodness earlier in the book. To me it felt like half way through the book
the author hit a switch that said REFORMED! and poof! we as readers are supposed to believe it.
3-The affliction that hits Caitlin a bit to over-dramatic, and a bit to quickly resolved. A miracle!!
4-Kind of got to corny for me.

Still some really great scenes, dialogue between the characters.

If your looking for a quick romantic read, go for it, entertaining but NOT fabulous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a series July 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
OMG! I laughed, cried and squealed with delight. I love a strong woman who does not sacrifice her strength to please a man, Caitlin was that woman. Poor Harlow did not have a chance after the cake challenge, he fell hard, really hard. I loved how Caitlin got her wishes at the end- all of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars All about a house July 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not a fan of the bosom-buster genre, so I'm not sure why I picked this up. But I liked it. I thought the plot surrounding the ultimate ownership of a manor (4 possibilities) was well thought out.

I agree with the dissenters that the hot sex was premature and the overhaul of the rake's personality was too sudden.

All this being said, the author knows how to craft a sentence, a talent which is getting more and more difficult to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, sexy romp March 23, 2012

A novella often runs the risk of being too short for real character development, but the first of Bronwen Evan's Wicked Wagers series creates strong, believable characters right from the start. Lady Caitlin Southall is outspoken and independent, but you never see her as too modern; she feels like a genuine Regency woman. The Duke himself, Harlow Telford, is delicious - a sexy blend of raw male power and emotional vulnerability. It is clear why he would be attracted to a strong woman like Caitlin - it's good for a man to be told he's a dick sometimes! I loved the wagers, especially the cake baking contest, which injected humour and made both characters seem even more human and likeable. All of the supporting cast is very well drawn, too, adding depth and tension to the plot. The pacing was excellent - it romped along, but had enough softer, more intimate moments for you to catch your breath. And it's sexy as hell. I look forward to Ms Evans' next Wicked Wager!

5.0 out of 5 stars Whee - hang on for the ride! March 2, 2012

What a little scorcher! I loved Bronwen Evans' novel "Invitation to Ruin", and wondered how she'd be on second acquaintance.
Even better I think. I was grabbed from the very first page, and whirled along on a most satisfying adventure.
Harlow was gorgeous, Caitlin was strong enough to provide a perfect foil, and their three-way wager made for very entertaining reading.
Suffice to say I had my nose in my Kindle at every opportunity until I hit the last page.

I really enjoyed this book. For a novella the characters were very well developed and the plot was well thought out. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.
