I enjoy Pawn Stars. The people that are running that shop are smart and I learn a lot about old antiques. I thought I would give Hardcore Pawn a try. My first inkling that something was off was during the opening when they said "This is our shop and NOBODY messes with us!" That seemed a little odd. I don't remember anyone ever "messing" with the Pawn Stars folks, let alone the need to make an announcement about it.

The next thing I noticed was the sort of items you see on the show. I am used to seeing art, old war relics, ancient books, and Hollywood memorabilia and learning about their history. You're not going to learn much on this show unless you have a keen interest in things like hub caps, generators, and bowling balls.

I was still willing to give it a chance, though. In the middle of the first deal, for no reason at all, the customer started yelling and demanding that they buy his item. If this had been Pawn Stars, I could see Rick calmly looking at them and asking "Really?" but this is not Pawn Stars. Instead, the daughter who acts like a loud woman in a bar who has had a few too many beers unleashes a barrage of shouting at the customer. Then came the finale. The huge black bouncer drags them out of the store and pushes them through the front door. I immediately knew two things. 1: It was obviously staged. 2: It was staged by someone with a junior high mentality.

The funny part about it is that these people are too unintelligent to be embarrassed. When the black bouncer drags them out of the store they give this big rodent-like smile for the camera as if they have done something very clever. The next deal ended the same way with son, daughter, or old man "really telling them off" as the customer is dragged from the store.

Fans of Jerry Springer might enjoy this ghetto-trash exhibition. For normal people, there's nothing amusing about watching two grown siblings viciously rip at each other to win daddy's affections. If that isn't nauseating enough, Les, the sick-in-the-head-daddy-dearest, knowing Seth and Ashley can't get along, purposely pits them against each other. Instead of remaining neutral when the psycho-drama unfolds with Seth and Ash screaming obscenities, Les choses a side. This family is dysfunctional and disgusting beyond measure. Neither family member sees that he or she is part of the problem.

Hardcore Pawn operates at a guttural level. The customer rarely receives a decent price for his merchandise. If Les, Seth and Ash can't steal the item from a desperate and destitute customer for 5-cents on the dollar, they won't buy it.

A much better production is Pawn Stars where viewers learn some interesting history of the antiquities brought to the shop. The family is hysterically funny without being cruel to each other or their customers.

I've never had to pawn anything so for me watching this is very entertaining. I am sure these people have a hard choice to make when going in with their items in exchange for cold, hard cash. Overall I like the family dynamic as well as the business. There is never a shortage of unique customers or items that they want to pawn. My favorite was the somewhat masculine Dominantrix who wanted to sell her bondage gear.

I've seen some episodes of this show and didn't expect much starting from the beginning, believing the best approch to this show is to take it in small doses, but surprisingly the show kept me entertained. The show let me know some of the risks of pawn dealing, how items can be not worth anything and how judgements are made by actual staff (something Pawn Stars lacks). As for the staff of this pawn shop, I like how they do business but sometimes their personalities raise a question mark (though not as much as I've seen in later episodes).

Now, I need to make something clear, this show does deal with pawning stuff but is more like the shows that follow a group of people around. Meaning this show is more about the human elements of pawning, unlike pawn stars which is more like a triva show with stuff about the four guys thrown in.

I enjoyed it but take my advice, watch it in doses and treat it as cheap entertainment.

Hardcore Pawn is a very entertaining show. I was hoping to watch it on Amazon Prime... but at $2.99 per episode there's simply no chance that's going to happen.

I'd maybe consider $2.99 for the season in HD... but for now I'll settle for the dozen or so free episodes available on Verizon On-Demand.

I would definitely like this show to be available via Amazon Prime.
