Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective,
By don cody (Oxnard, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dangerous Davies (Hardcover)
A wonderful little book. Dangerous is full of incongruities, but he's loyal, dogged, "canny" in his own way, and seems to hold no grudges. I make a point of rereading it every year or year-and-a-half because it always makes me smile. (I close my eyes and I can almost see Dangerous charging up the stairs with a bucket on his head.) It helps that it is a competent mystery with a surprise ending. For a double treat, see the English-made movie by the same title starring Bernard Cribbins.

funny and human,
This review is from: Dangerous Davies, the Last Detective (Paperback)
It's a pleasure to find an investigator who is as concerned for the guilty as for anyone hurt. By being sympathetic rather than tough, Dangerous gets the best out of everyone, if they have a best to offer. Giving him a sidekick who is more involved with library research than with actual life is a great way to include information without seeming to bog down in the past. His decency does get Dangerous into some amusing situations, but his humanity turns out to be an effective investigative tool, regardless of surprises.

I have now read three of the Dangerous Davies books, based on my delight with this first one. All the antics of Dangerous are amusing and it is only incidental that he solves the mystery.

I recently started watching the Dangerous Davies series on television, and decided to try the first book in the series. The book is good, but I prefer the television series. It's probably a one-time read, but that was enjoyable.

Readers; Yet another installment of the Dangerous Davies litinany. Not much changes from one book to the next. The plot wanders here and about. The 'cast' bumble along with little thought to the context. But for all of that, they are an enjoyable read for a bus ride home, or on an airplane, it holds your interest, and if you leave it on the seat, you'll not weep over the loss. This is not crime fiction along the lines of P.D.James et al. but it is 'fair to middling'

Having watched the videos of The Last Detective, I was curious about Leslie Thomas and the book. I can see how the episodes were developed from reading the book.
