4.0 out of 5 stars THE RAPTURE - PART TWO (3.8)
Seriously, this is the second coming of the Echoes album from last year. That is not a bad thing at all, because I absolutely loved Echoes. Now the obvious bass lines that have been ripped from previous said album may grate on some, for this listener, its just another slice of heaven.(Cure pun Intended) apart from the usual influences (Gang of Four, Wire, The Cure, New...

3.0 out of 5 stars POST-PUNK in the 00's.
Another band taking aim at the post-punk/new wave revival. Granted, the base lines are excellent, the guitars sound like rehashed Daniel Ash, the lyrics are kinda...silly. Sorry, but it's true. I can't say that this album is bad...but it's not great. Just ok. For fans of THE FAINT, INTERPOL, and YEAH YEAH YEAH'S.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE RAPTURE - PART TWO (3.8), October 13, 2004

Seriously, this is the second coming of the Echoes album from last year. That is not a bad thing at all, because I absolutely loved Echoes. Now the obvious bass lines that have been ripped from previous said album may grate on some, for this listener, its just another slice of heaven.(Cure pun Intended) apart from the usual influences (Gang of Four, Wire, The Cure, New Order) I also hear a bit of The Buggles (the 6th track "Anyone" in particular) You can take that with a grain of salt, but I swear it's there.

Now for some odd reason the great b-side, "X and Y" was left off, but what is on here is worthy indeed. Between Us and them and Available will have you up and dancing in no-time. One difference is while records from the Rapture and Franz Ferdinand push the nerds on the dance floor, the groove is still rock and roll. That's also the case here, the base is defintely more electronic-disco and less art-house indie rock. But don't get me wrong, Dangerous Dreams fits PERFECTLY next to Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, Ladytron, The Faint and the like. Fans of those bands need to add The Moving Units if they haven't already.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, May 6, 2005

Good CD. "Between Us and Them" is a great song, and I disagree with the reviews that this just copies the other NY dance-punk bands. I think it's a lot better than the Rapture and so on, and it's more catchy and less fake-funky. It's a little repetitive, but I enjoy it.

i guess you could put this band into the retro-rock phase that's taking over right now but i don't want to.
even though, moving units have some of that retro-rock flavor, they also surprise you with their bass lines and songs that could be played in clubs. all in all, after listening to their EP (which is very good as well!) this is a CD that does not disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars High Energy Alternative Rock (with an early 80s influecne), December 4, 2004

Great CD ~ it grows on you with each listen (sort of like the first Interpol CD or Franz Ferdinand). One can hear smidgets of Gang of Four, the Police, New Order,...+ interwoven with their own style. Would love to see them play live ~ hopefully, MU will tour more extensively than just the big markets. Of course, it's music most of us won't hear on the radio because it doesn't fit "the formula" like Ashley Simpson so purchase the CD and hear some great music that you can turn others onto.

This wouldn't be an album I would listen to frequently and I never play right through. Definitely an acquired taste.

4.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive Indie, February 28, 2006
This review is from: Dangerous Dreams (Audio CD)
This is an extremely repetitive CD. Patterns, riffs, and their style is completely repeated on every song. Don't get me wrong, every song is incredible. From opener Emancipation with descending guitar patterns, and higher octaves with vocal melodies with striking catchy lyrics saying "I'm Your Slave" you realize this band has some incredible talent with such simple riffs. The record presents these songs nearly like the sound you would hear at their live show.

Overall, great sound, some melodies that will never be forgotten, and a throwback style that this group's fans can enjoy for the time being. Not original I'll give you that but amazing 80's and funk-disco basslines. Triplet pattern in many songs, including their old EP. It's become the "Moving Units Bassline." Excluding a few tracks near the end of the album, all the songs are dancy but not extremely catchy. Killer/Lover sounds like an ambient dark night on drugs. They grow on you eventually because their guitar is raw, just like The Rapture and although Blake isn't the best singer in the world, his vocals that were recorded (probably after 300 takes) sound perfect on the album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moving in a Different Direction, February 17, 2006

I picked up this album after I heard that they were coming to Des Moines to open up for one of my all time favorite bands, Nine Inch Nails. I figured, hey, Trent has a good ear for musical talent, after finding great talent out there like Manson, Prick, and Pig, so how could he go wrong with Moving Units? What an unusual pick, if you ask me. This band seems like a new wave ska band that was somehow transported to the present time from the eighties. Not that that is a bad thing. They have really catchy hooks, and after a couple of listening, they really grow on you. Not my favorite band by far, but definately not a bad one either. Spectacular tracks on the album include "Anyone and Scabs". Give it a listen. They just might grow on you.
