5 I'm in deep love with Mark stars!

Don't you just love it when a book grabs you from the very beginning? That's what happened here. The action started right away and there was no way I could have put my kindle down! My eyes were completely riveted to the pages of this story.

I've read a lot of YA/NA books lately, and while I love them, it was time to dip my toes into a more adult romance. You know, minus the silly drama and all that. There was plenty of drama and suspense to this story, but it was psycho rapist, stalker, killer, ex-boyfriend drama--NOT love triangle I-think-I-love-you-but-I-think-I-love-him-too drama. It was refreshing.

"Give it up. I'm a deep pool of the darkest water you've ever seen. You don't want to go swimming, trust me."

At the beginning of the story, Sarah is attacked and she literally runs straight into Mark. She's completely helpless and has no choice but to accept the help that he is offering her despite the fact that she REALLY doesn't want any help. She's used to doing things on her own and that's the way she likes it. At least, that's the way she's convinced herself she likes it. The truth is Sarah has a troubled past that haunts her and she's been running from it for a long time. She was in an abusive relationship years ago and has never quite recovered from the trauma she suffered in that situation. Her recent attack stirs up some suppressed memories and she comes to rely on Mark more than she intends to.

"Sis, think about your life. You insist you're happy, but you seem...incomplete, and it's obvious to everyone but you."

The evolving relationship between Mark and Sarah is what I loved about this story the most. Sarah has serious trust issues and finds it hard to let Mark in at first.

Summary from the publisher:

Sarah Jennings wants nothing more than a quiet life--alone.

Raised by an eccentric mother, their life on the road only taught her how to run away from hard times. But when she finds herself in an abusive relationship, this lesson serves her well.

Now, back in her hometown, she's found a place she loves. She's a first grade teacher, and with few friends and less family around, she has what she wants, a quiet life under the radar where she can be free of her past and live quietly. Finally comfortable in her own skin, she's settled, and less fearful than she's ever been in her life.

But it only takes one night and one act of violence for everything to change. Injured and afraid, Sarah wants to run again, but Mark Summors refuses to let her go.

Just when Sarah thinks she can have Mark and the life he promises, her past comes back to haunt her.

Mark Summors was born and raised in Santa Rosa. He married his high school sweetheart and never questioned his life, until he found his wife with another man.

Now divorced, he wants something more. He's passionate about his job, he wants to protect people, and he devotes his life to it.

This time he's protecting more than just another client, he's protecting his future; at least, Sarah Jennings will be his future, once he convinces her she loves him.

My Musings:

I really wanted to like this book. It had a strong beginning with a likeable hero and heroine and a less common plotline than a lot of romances. I thought the first half of the book was well written and I was impressed that it was by a debut author. Unfortunately, I was tired of it by the time I was half way through.

As an avid reader of romantic suspense I can say with certainty Dana Mason and her breakout novel Dangerous Embrace are winners! The opening page grabbed me and took me on a journey into Sarah's soul; twisted and destroyed and now dependent on one man, Mark, to protect her. What I loved about the story was the realness of the characters. There is no question that neither are perfect and Ms. Mason did an amazing job in letting us see their strengths THROUGH their weaknesses. The twists in the plot were just enough that you had to turn the page just one more time to see if you were right. Ms. Mason kept the suspense tightly controlled until the very end leaving you breathless and smiling. Dana Mason is an author to watch and I will certainly be back for the second book in her Embrace series. Kudo's Ms. Mason on a well written, captivating story written from the heart about the soul.

I started reading this book the minute it came in the mail and I could not put it down! Six hours later, I was finished reading and wished like crazy that there was a follow-up book ready for me to continue! Dana Mason knows her stuff! Full of tragedy and romance, something that you wouldn't think would go so well together. This book made me laugh and it made me cry...violent scenes as well as heated intimacy scenes...this book did not disappoint! Mason is sure to be a hit and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!

Dana Mason did an excellent job writing this book. I was captivated by her characters, I couldn't put it down, and ended up reading it within 24hrs! Mason did an amazing job keeping the reader hooked. Sarah is stubborn and independent, but she is a survivor and a wonderful role model for anyone who has been victimized. Mark has the typical personality of most overprotective cops, or former cop in his case. Together they make an oustanding team. I hope Mason continues to write, as I look forward to reading more of her work!
