Book Description

1887744088 978-1887744089 June 1, 1998 3
This now classic ESL work "for language learners and others" has been thoroughly revised, with many new features, including an easier reading level, more illustrations, up-to-date definitions, many new words, a phonetic pronunciation key, true stories, and an interview with Dr. Reinhold Aman, the world's foremost authority on dangers in any language. Dangerous English 2000! will help your students avoid embarrassment, avoid insulting others, learn correct terms for the doctor's office, understand street language, use euphemisms, and gain insights into some intriguing and usually misunderstood elements of American culture. Partial list of contents include
* Is your pronunciation "Dangerous?"
* The social classes of words: formal, general use, euphemism, children's words, slang, vulgar--including where and when each are used
* Common words with dangerous double meanings
* How safe is your English? Test yourself
* Religious taboo words
* Dangerous English goes to the movies: understanding the ratings
* We talk with our hands--but what are they saying? Dangerous body language

* What shall we call ourselves and others? (Avoiding ethnic and racial slurs)
* Politically incorrect words to avoid
* True stories of Dangerous English in action
* Dangerous English goes to the doctor--talking about male and female sexual body parts, functions and malfunctions
Plus
* Illustrations to define terms, with synonyms in all six social classes
* The human body: male and female
* In the bathroom
* In the bedroom
* On the Street
* Dangerous people
* Dangerous changes in the English language
* Definitions of 750+ words for body parts, sex, bathroom terms, taboos--with sample sentences to show usage

Please note: Dangerous English 2000! can be dangerous. Recommended for those who are not shocked that we have sexual body parts and that English has a variety of words for them and their functions. While these are among the most interesting and necessary words in the English language, the text is not recommended for classroom use for students under 18. For adult classes, divide the groups by gender and use discretion or let students order their own copies. Detailed suggestions to the teacher are included.

This review is from: Dangerous English 2000!: An Indispensable Guide for Language Learners and Others (Paperback)
Elizabeth Claire brings her long experience in the classroom to this undertaking - a dictionary of the taboo words in English. The illustrations are graphic, the definitions clear and concise. Not intended to titillate but inform, the slim volume includes includes, for example, lists of words with double meanings and words which learners of English often mispronounce with embarrassing results, plus a glossary of the vocabulary encountered in the doctor's office, plus definitions which include the slang term, the child's term, the vulgar term, the euphemism, for various sexual and bathroom words. Our adult students, new to life in the US, tell us this book is extremely helpful. This book answers questions parents have when their kids come home from school with new and unfamiliar terms in English. Not intended as a textbook but as a reference.
