Book Description

May 15, 1996
The three women in Hazel Hucker's delightful new novel are each faced with painful and difficult situations. After the death of her two-year-old daughter, Maggie Easton desperately wants to have another child, but her husband feels strongly that their three sons are more than enough. Louise Bennett yearns to escape Hampshire and return to London, but her partner, Simon, delights in country living. And middle-aged Brozie is trapped in a loveless marriage with the dying Herbert.

Enter Charley St. George, an extraordinary stranger, brimming with ideas to solve each of their problems. Attractive, witty, and energetic, Charley seems too good to be true. Yet, as the three women grow more and more dependent on his favors, they learn he may be hiding secrets of his own.

From the author of the acclaimed Cousin Susannah comes a fresh, contemporary novel of love, life, and heartache in the rural village of Abbotsbridge. Filled with memorable characters and a constant enthusiasm for life's rich possibilities, A Dangerous Happiness is a story that goes straight to the heart.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Driving a flashy red Porsche and bringing his unbounded enthusiasm and flair for life, young Charley St. George descends upon the idyllic English village of Abbotsbridge to change the lives of three women whose marital, career and childbearing struggles are the focus of historical novelist Hucker's (Cousin Susannah) contemporary romance. Irrepressible Charley meets lonely Brozie Hamilton, 52, whose bitter husband is dying of cancer, quickly wins her friendship and lifts her depression. Two of Brozie's friends come under Charley's influence, too. Maggie Easton has lost a two-year-old child and wants another baby, but her husband refuses. Career woman Louise Bennett is conflicted about motherhood and has been deceiving her lover by taking birth-control pills while he believes they're trying to conceive. Charley finds solutions for both women's problems, though at the price of an obsessive love for Maggie. Fundamental questions about juggling career and marriage and other issues are raised and entertainingly, if too easily, answered in this paean to pregnancy and motherhood. Details about horseracing, gardening and quality furniture create an intimate, rosy picture of a village and a group of women who do not understand that Charley's "chronic happiness" is a psychiatric disorder. Charley pays the ultimate price for his optimism, but his legacy of spiritual and romantic love enables all three women to find what they need to get on with their lives.

From Library Journal

As spring comes to the village of Abbotsbridge in rural Hampshire, three women find themselves at crossroads in their lives. Louise, having attained the career of her dreams, is loath to threaten it by moving to the country and having children. Maggie, mourning the death of a daughter, fights to convince her husband to try again. Brozie, always unloved, endures the crotchets of a dying and bitter husband. Then brilliant, eccentric, and vital Charley St. George bursts into their lives, energizing and transforming them and opening new possibilities for all. This charming tale from the author of The Aftermath of Oliver (Ulverscroft, 1995) is highly recommended for libraries where Rosamunde Pilcher's work is popular.?Cynthia Johnson, Cary Memorial Lib., Lexington, Mass.
