An old style thriller, June 29, 2010
I enjoyed this book for a number of reasons and they may be all the wrong reasons. I would firstly say that this book is a kind of time capsule as it is about aristocratic and upper class heroes resolving conspiracies. This type of book was quite common many years back and nowadays few authors would select such unlikely characters for their novels.
I also consider the book a time capsule due to the old fashioned views that are expressed in the book. the characters are clearly conservative and also condescending towards people who are not white. But though these views are expressed, they are not done so in an excessively offensive way but are used to reflect ideas of a bygone age.
Novertheless the book has its strengths, such as a thrilling plot, which is set in Ceylon, currently known as Sri Lanka. And considerable research as the author, Dennis Wheatley has described the island's history, geography and society thoroughly. Living in Sri Lanka, I can say that Wheatley had indeed visited the island and describe dit accurately to the extent that roads and landmarks are described accurately.
Dennis wheatley was a prolific author of mainly novels of this type and many of his stories dealt with the occult. they were popular until the 1970s but in recent years bhis books are out of print and difficult to obtain.
