Book Description

March 1, 1995
Handsome, kind, and unassuming, Mr. Gray seemed the answer to Deborah Weyman's prayers. For once she accepted the position he offered, she would finally be safe from the notorious Lord Kendal, a man she had good reason to believe had murdered her former employer -- and was now after her. But there were certain things about Mr. Gray that Deborah should have noticed: the breadth of his shoulders, the steel in his voice, the gleam in his uncommonly blue eyes -- things that might have warned her that Mr. Gray was no savior, but a very dangerous man....

Too tempting to resist...

Though she posed as a dowdy schoolteacher, Lord Kendal saw right through her disguise to the treacherous beauty beneath. Now, convinced that she alone can tell him the truth about Lord Barrington's murder -- and the whereabouts of Barrington's young son -- he coolly masquerades as the innocuous Mr. Gray. And only when it's too late for Deborah to run will she learn what it means to be at his mercy -- and powerless to resist his seduction....

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Fast-paced and full of surprises, Thornton's (Dangerous to Love) latest novel is an exciting story of romance, mystery, and adventure set in England during the Napoleonic Wars. In the prologue, Deborah Weyman and Quentin, the eight-year-old boy in her charge, witness the murder of the boy's father, Gilbert Barrington. Deborah, who does not see the murderer clearly, hears Barrington address his killer as "Lord Kendal" and is horrified to find that she and Kendal have been named as Quentin's guardians. Fearing that Kendal will kill Quentin to silence him, she takes the boy, assumes a false identity and goes into hiding. Kendal, upon learning that Deborah has abducted Quentin, assumes that she had something to do with Barrington's death and with the espionage Barrington had been about to uncover. He sets out to apprehend her and, when he does, she proves to be a worthy opponent. Their battle of wills is skillfully woven into a complex plot that exuberantly carries the reader through abductions, unmaskings, blackmail and murder. Thornton's firm control of her plot, her graceful prose and her witty dialogue make Dangerous to Kiss a pleasure to read.

Review

Running from the murderer who killed her employer Lord Barrington, Deborah Weyman knows she must protect Quentin, Lord Barrington's son. She has reason to suspect that Lord Kendal is the murderer and that they may be his next target. Not knowing where to go, she takes refuge at a girls' school where her childhood governess works, hoping to find a job as a governess. When she is offered a position by Mr. Gray she gratefully accepts it. Quentin is safely tucked away until she can contact his uncle, so Deborah goes with Mr. Gray, never suspecting that he is the man she needs to fear. John Grayson, the Earl of Kendal, has concocted a plan designed to make Deborah Weyman tell him the truth. He poses as the kind Mr. Gray in order to gain her trust. Once he has her alone, he intends to break her will by making her fear and hate him so he can find out what she knows about Lord Barrington's death and where Quentin is. When Deborah discovers that Mr. Gray is Lord Kendal, she is frightened. She has spent many years running from her past and Gray seems determined to find out what she is hiding. Her attraction to Gray is unlike anything she has ever felt and she keeps reminding herself that he might be a murderer. But her heart and body won't listen. Gray has a reputation with women. But since he met Deborah he hasn't been able to think of another woman even though she has tried to disguise her appearance and make herself look older. Something about her makes him want to protect her if only she will let him.Elizabeth Thornton is truly a gifted author! Dangerous to Kiss is filled with passion and intrigue! Suspenseful and sensual! The characters are realistic and fascinating and the plot is full of twists! Elizabeth Thornton is a name to watch for! Romance at its best! I was turning pages well into the night!Kristina Wright -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times

4.0 out of 5 stars Love this novel, March 27, 2000

Thorn "thornsilver" (Forest Hills, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dangerous to Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoy Thornton's novels very much because of the good mix of compelling characters, hot romance and twisted mistery (and I do mean "twisted"; do not look at the last page first!)

This book does not quite have the poignancy of my favorites "Whisper Your Name", "Bride's Bodyguard" and "Dangerous to Hold", but it is a very well spent evening regardless. You will have trouble putting it down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, could have been better, June 11, 2000
This review is from: Dangerous to Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
After witnessing the death of her employer, Governess Deborah Weyman knows the identity of the murderer and whisks her ward Quentin away to safety. Knowing that the murderer, John Gray, the Earl of Kendal, is named Quentin's guardian Deborah must do everything in her power to protect him.

Gray knows he must do something drastic to find Miss Weyman and get Quentin away from his kidnapper. Unknown to him that Deborah believes he is the murderer, he devises a plan to kidnap Deborah and force her to inform his of Quentin's whereabouts. What he didn't expect was for the elderly governess to turn into a beautiful swan.

After realizing her mistake Deborah goes along with Gray's plan to catch her former employer's murderer. But can she keep her own secrets safe while falling deeply in love with Gray?

After reading WHISPER HIS NAME and STRANGERS AT DAWN I decided to go back and read an older book by Elizabeth Thornton. Unfortunately I wasn't as impressed. A good read but not up to par with her newest works

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is perfection!, January 13, 1999
This review is from: Dangerous to Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
A wonderful story developed by a master, Elizabeth Thornton. Excellent plot, cast of characters and romance. You will come to love Gray and Deborah. Their story carries both a romance and suspense, without taking away from each other. The story is well established, the character development is superb and the pace of the story is perfect. You find yourself saying...only one more chapter and then she teases you into reading the whole book at one sitting!

She introduces a small cast of supporting roles, who in my opinion should have their own stories. Somehow, Ms. Thornton has introduced them so successfully that it only adds and does not distract from the main characters.

Ms. Thornton writes a superior romance, it is sheer agony to wait a year for each new release! I have read this book from cover to cover four times and have thoroughly enjoyed it!
