This review is from: And Dangerous to Know (Henry Gamadge Mystery) (Paperback)
Until recently I had never heard of author Elizabeth Daly and
the many books she wrote starring, Henry Gamadge, detective. Gamadge has no office but when the police are stymied in a murder case, they often go to Henry. He has his own ideal little life with his manservant and to keep busy will dabble into any murder that piques his interest. In this one, the wealthy Dunbar family lives on the upper east side of NYC. Alice their adult daughter recovering from a cancelled engagement makes up and prints greeting cards for a living. Her great aunt has died, falling down steps from a stroke (supposedly) and Alice had ex pected to receive a million dollars as her inheritance then discovered after aunt's death, she was left nothing; all of aunt's money going to charitable institutions. After dinner one evening with her father, mother and sister, she puts on her hat and coat and goes to fashion store and gets rather flashy clothes, opposite of what she would normally wear including gaudy makeup. the next thing we know is that Alice has disappeared; no one knows where she is. This is where our Henry comes in and manages to solve the case. Author Elizabeth Daly was born in NYC in 1878, daughter of a judge (as was Anna Katherine Green, another superb mystery writer born about same time). Elizabeth was dubbed "the American Peter Wimsey". An interesting note is that her neice is author, Eleanor Boylan who writes the Clara Gamadge mysteries (when Henry dies, wife, Clara steps in as Henry did to help solve mysteries) . Eleanor must have inherited her writing talent from her famous aunt as her books are also very good. |
