A Great Summer Read!,
By
This review is from: One Dangerous Lady (Hardcover)
This book was so much fun and so easy to read. I couldn't put it down. I think I read it in three sittings -- would have been two sittings if I hadn't had to go pick up kids from little league. The hijinx of all levels of society -- jealousy, revenge, sex games, murder -- are somehow much more fascinating to read about in the billionaire set! Dripping with blood AND diamonds is, after all, a much more fun read than just plain dripping with blood. Anybody can do that. The author knows the New York social scene inside and out. She has a light touch and great characters. I really loved the prequel to this book, it was called SOCIAL CRIMES. People should read that one first and then this one. They are both really fabulous and would take hardly any time at the beach.

An Easy Breezy Summertime Read,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: One Dangerous Lady (Hardcover)
This novel serves as a sequal of sorts for Jo Slater, the star of "Social Crimes," Jane Stanton Hitchcock's highly enjoyable novel. Like it's predecessor this novel involves social climbing on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the lengths that people will go to in order to stay on top.
While fun, easy, breezy and quite enjoyable "One Dangerous Lady" is not as good as "Social Crimes." It lacks some of the depth of the first novel and features a pared down cast of characters. Regardless, considering the amount of literary trash being produced today, this novel is fun and light and is recommended as a beach book par excellence!

This is the first and only book I've read by Hitchcock and I couldn't fininsh it.
There was so much repitious dialogue and little forward plot movement. Dissapointing!

I really enjoyed this book. After reading and loving 'Social Crimes', I couldn't wait to get a hold of this book. I was thrilled when I received it for Christmas and breezed through it in a couple days.
In this tale, the Grand Dame of the New York social set, Jo Slater, reacquaints us with all her friends and foes. And after the disastrous wedding of her best friends daughter, she finds herself in the middle of another social mystery, and is again fighting to keep her place as reigning queen of New York. But one Carla Cole is making that increasingly difficult with her newly acquired billions after the disappearance of her husband. In the end this was a very good book...not as great as 'Social Crimes' in my opinion, but darn close. The characters are real (Betty, Jo's best friend, is just hilarious, and has some wonderful one-liners) and very well developed. I look forward to Ms. Hitchcock's next novel, and am curious to see if she's going to continue with the 'Jo Slater...NYC socialite detective' theme. I love the character of Jo and would be thrilled to see her do so...guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This is the first novel I've read written by Ms Hitchcock and I must say, it's fascinating. The pace of the story is excellent, never too slow and not too fast either. It has plenty of social intrigue, murder, mayhem, and obsession to keep you riveted. It is quite the perfect choice to read on a cold night.

Jo Slater is a modern Becky Sharp,
By Susan "slowdownreader" (new york city) - See all my reviews

In another page turning book, this writer has combined the delicious details of upper-class life--the yachts, the parties, the clothes, the customs--with tremendous suspense and one of the greatest women characters since Thackeray. Jo Slater is as unscrupulous and devious as a woman can be, but somehow it is impossible not to cheer her on. Captivating, thrilling and impossible to put down.

Great sequel.,

First of all I would recommend reading Social Crimes first. This book can stand on its own, but it makes SO much more sense if you know what happened in Jo's past. The story line is good. Until the last page, unpredictable wonderful intrigues keep unveiling themselves. In fact the only reason I did not give One Dangerous Lady 5 stars is because I read it directly after Social Crimes (for the millionth time) this time, and the tone seems slightly different. If you read it right after Social Crimes you'll see what I mean. This is only natural since the author spent years between this book and Social Crimes... but the book is still incredible.

I really enjoyed this book. It was alot of fun about rich and powerful people in New York society. This book is a sequel to Social Crimes which was also enjoyable. I read this after reading a very good, extremely sad book, Shadow of the Wind. One Dangerous Lady was just the book I needed after reading such a "heavy" book.

Fun, fun, fun, beach reading. Page turner galore. Light, but has all the elements of a great summer novel: murder, mistery, sex, scandal, intrigue, $$$...

The Merry Widow,

This review is from: One Dangerous Lady (Hardcover)
In One Dangerous Lady, Jo Slater's back at the pinnacle of NYC's high society. All's going well as she attends a glitzy wedding luncheon in the Bahamas, where she becomes better acquainted with hostess Carla Cole, a lady with a shady past. Carla's husband disappears the very next day. When the socialites return to New York, Carla begins circling around Jo and her coterie like a shark, horning in, with remarkable success, where she isn't really wanted. Naturally, Jo becomes incensed and suspicious, and over the next 6 months, she once again embarks on a quest for revenge and restitution. While one might think that this plot would be obvious and predictable, it is anything but. With humor and panache, author Hitchcock concocts a devious, convoluted plot in which not one, but two truly dangerous ladies play a deadly game of cat and mouse.
Like its predecessor, Social Crimes, One Dangerous Lady is a light but enjoyable and engrossing tale set in the glossy, glamorous, and often superficial world of the very rich. |
