5.0 out of 5 stars Risky business . . ., October 6, 2004
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
Risky business and loads of laughs make up Amanda Quick's _Dangerous_. Once again, Ms. Quick delivers characters who are so well suited for each other that they could only fall in love. Dubbed the Original and the Fallen Angel, Prudence and Sebastian are not defined by their monikers, but are defined by their unique and compelling personalities. Prudence is impulsive, persistent, and brave and Sebastian is dark, brooding, yet oh-so-gentle. These two meet and a love is forged that is at once beautiful and tumultuous. Sebastian has a penchant for growing bored easily, but Prue keeps him on his toes and always interested as she leads him on a merry chase. Watching Prue and Sebastian clash about what things are proper for a woman to do is vastly entertaining. It's also extremely funny how Sebastian confuses love with fondness while being profoundly jealous of other men's interest in Prue. For example, on the subject of a rather daringly cut gown, this exchange takes place:

_Prudence_, "My lord, are you implying that you do not care for my new gown?"

_Sebastian_, "What gown? I did not notice any gown on you tonight, madam. I thought perhaps you had forgotten to put it on before you left home."

Ms. Quick's wit shines through in this novel as it does in all of her work and you'll find yourself laughing aloud. As always, the mystery of the novel is the driving force and this one was quite intriguing. It will keep you guessing until the very last pages. Once again, Ms. Quick presents a tale full of romance, mystery, and humor that will keep you turning the pages and wishing for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breathtaking Adventure, June 22, 2000
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
Amanda Quick's Dangerous trounces most of the novels in the historical genre. The story is absolutely fabulous. This was the first Amanda Quick story I ever read and I have been hooked ever since.

Prudence Merryweather is a young woman who investigates the paranormal. She is a self proclaimed blue-stocking who has no interest in fashionable sociey. She is willing to risk everything to prevent her brother from dueling with Sebastian, the Earl of Angelstone.

Sebastian also known as the Fallen Angel is mysterious and misunderstood by sociey. He is a man who has spent too much time in the shadows and is positively fascinated by Prudence.

The two join up to investigate ghosts who are haunting several members of the ton. Sebastian is awed by Prudence's spirit and personality. Prudence is determined to prove the Fallen Angel doesn't deserve his nickname. The two are married due to extenuating circumstances and Prudence finally manages to thaw Sebastian's frozen heart.

Affair has everything any reader of romance needs for a sucessful story. The plot, characters, and dialogue are exceptional. Don't let this book pass you by.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Quick, January 7, 2000
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
I must say that of all the Amanda Quick books I have read thus far, "Dangerous" is tied with "Mystique" in the running of my personal favorite.

Although Quick seems to use the same formula for all of historical romances (heroine with one distinct quirk + hero who needs to be taught to love and laugh = a love that will make you laugh, cry, and sigh), "Dangerous" had a few twists that gave it a distinct, well, likeability (No, that's not a real word but it captures the mood).

Prue (I can't stand the name Prudence but I love the nickname) is a refreshing character who is as artless and kind as she is quirky and intelligent. I like how in this particular novel, her quirk of solving mysteries is shared by the hero.

Sebastian is a delight. He lives up to most readers expectations as dark, mysterious, and badly in need of the heroine's love (whether he knows it or not) but his 'humoring' Prue is a treat to watch and his embracing of Prue's talent is a deviation from Quick's norm and makes it that much more enjoyable.

This book is more a sweet romance than a passionate one but contains witty dialogue, fun characters, and a fairly decent mystery (Although the end was very lacking. The murder's reaction when caught was disappointing and seemed forced).

All in all, a very enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Amanda Quick novels!, September 8, 2008

This gothic lite story starts with Miss Prudence Merryweather paying a visit to the Earl of Angelstone, Sebastian Fleetwood, at his home way past the hour of acceptability. She has come because her absurdly protective brother is determined to avenge her honor, due to The Fallen Angel being seen her in presence. The ambiance starts up immediately when we are introduced to Sebastian, who has been relaxing in his home in a state of dishabille. He eyes Prue up and down like a tasty snack, disbelieving that a gently bred young lady would visit him, alone, at such a late hour. This makes her fair game in his eyes and he intends to claim her before the end of the night. She has come to demand he apologize to her brother and prevent their dawn appointment. She assures his agreement through her clever banter and Sebastian is charmed. He agrees to her terms and seals their deal with a kiss, forever changing both their lives in that moment.

Prudence is the ton's newest toy. They have deemed her The Original, due to her titallating penchant for paranormal investigations. She has recently come to London and immediately captures the attention of Sebastian. He has been in society for awhile and the ton delights in mocking him behind his back, while fawning to his face. He suffers from ennui, boredom, and knows she is the one to change that. He is as drawn to her lightness of spirit as she is drawn to his darkness. Helpless to resist her sunny allure, Sebastian marries Prudence and tries to bind her to him as tightly as he can, never realizing that she is as helpess to his allure as he is to her and wants only his love. Having been cold and alone for so long, Sebastian almost loses Prudence to his own need for vengeance against the family who turned their back on him so long ago. Prue immediately interferes with his plans of revenge, telling him he needs to let go of the past, in order to live in the future. While fighting with his own uncertainties and doubts, his cousin drags them into a revenge/murder plot that may or may not heal familial wounds and help Sebastian realize he's not as alone as he thinks.

As corny as it sounds, Sebastian and Prudence really do complete each other. They are compatible in every way. Sebastian looks at Prudence as if she's a very special gift and takes care of her with a gentleness that shocks him. She brightens his world with her gentle, caring manner and gives him laughter in his life. She's determined to save him from himself and does all she can to make sure he and his family reconcile. She even goes so far as to change her country girl style for something more sophisticated and urbane, a move that horrifies Sebastian and makes the reader laugh out loud. Amanda Quick has created a hard, aloof man in Sebastian and it is very endearing to see his cold spirit thaw around Prudence's natural cheerfulness. While the formula Amanda Quick uses is tried and true, it's the wonderful, quirky personalities that will remain with you long after you read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Laugh out Loud book, December 29, 1997
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
I have read several Amanda Quick books and found this one to be the most enjoyable so far. There were several times when I found myself laughing out loud and therefore would recommend it to anyone who wants their spirits lifted. There were many unexpected twists which kept me on my toes.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Quick so far, July 24, 2009
This review is from: Dangerous (Mass Market Paperback)
I read somewhere that Amanda Quick's historical romance novels follow an usual "formula": a somewhat tortured hero who needs to learn how to love and laugh + a quirky heroine who marches into his life bringing said love and laughter and never takes no for an answer. Well, I happen to like that "formula" and Dangerous does follow it, so no one will see me complaining here. :)

I loved the charming and sarcastic hero (Sebastian) and the funny and indomitable heroine (Prue). Their quick banter had me laughing from the start, and it didn't take long for Sebastian to realize that he was never going to win an argument with Prue. Not because he wasn't smart or witty enough but because he just wanted to make her happy. Too melodramatic? Perhaps, but it only made me love him more.

Sebastian and Prue's relationship went kind of smoothly from the start and all the way through the end. There wasn't really any big bumps on their road to the HEA - once they got together, there was no doubt on their minds their marriage was going to work - but that doesn't mean that the journey was boring. Quite the contrary. Their common interest in investigating "unusual" things - he helped a Bow Street Runner to solve some cases as a hobby and she was an amateur ghost hunter - kept the story flowing very nicely. The whodunit mystery they ended up investigating together was actually very good. Call me naïve but I didn't guess who the killer was. Not that there were that many suspects, it was the "why" that kept escaping me.

All in all, this was a great read and my favorite book by this author. I've only read 2 so far, but who's counting? (LOL)

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read in the Regency world, October 15, 2006
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
I found this book an excellent read, great fun, amusing dialogue and an interesting story.

I particularly liked the way Amanda Quick portrayed Sebastian as someone who had become so disenchanted with society that he behaved with disdain for his relatives.

I think the dialogue is particularly strong in this novel - the witticisms between Sebastian and Prudence are great fun. Read and enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars so-so......, March 6, 2002
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
I didn't pick up this book with any expectations. I picked it because the back sounded intresting and I needed a good novel. I managed to read it in one night. The book was alright but it could have been a lot better if the author paid attention to a few more details. The plot was quite quirky though and I liked the fact that the heroine wore glasses. It's the first romance I've read where either of the couple needs glasses. It adds a touch of reality to the story and it helped a lot. I also found myself laughing aloud at some of the select parts, particulary at Prudence.

This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
Having previously read Seduced by Amanda Quick, I was quite eager to purchase another of her books as I thoroughly enjoyed Seduced. But I have to say that I was sorely disappointed with Dangerous. Firstly, there was little or no chemistry between the two main characters, Prudence and Sebastian. They were quite boring and the constant referals to him as the devil himself and the Fallen Angel became quite overbearing and repetitive. Prudence was an annoying berating female that was constantly ordering Sebastian to be mature and to do what she expected him to do. Her constant nagging and outrage made me squirm and dislike her even more. I could not see how they came to be in love because there was no depth to their relationship....
