Book Description

0761905251 978-0761905257 May 13, 1998
In this uncompromising volume, Diana E Russell examines the relationships between pornography, misogyny and rape, and contends that these relationships are indeed dangerous to women.

After defining pornography and considering the various types of pornographic material available, the author demonstrates that hatred of women is a predominant aspect of pornography, and that racist undercurrents are often exploited in visual pornography of all types. She then provides a rich body of statistical evidence that supports the argument that pornography is a cause of rape.

This review is from: Dangerous Relationships: Pornography, Misogyny and Rape (Paperback)
It is very gratifying that someone has published such a wealth of information pertaining to the causal relationship between pornography and violence against women. While the author, Diana Russell, and I are on opposite sides of the political spectrum (she, an ardent feminist; I, an unabashed conservative), and while her writing clearly showed her bias toward liberal feminism (she assumed "all women" were outraged at the fact that Clarence Thomas was cleared of Anita Hill's accusations), the sheer facts she presented spoke for themselves. I'd challenge anyone to read this book and not come away with it sickened at and convinced that the porn industry does indeed aid in the perpetuation of crimes against women. Russell covers quite a few bases, and includes descriptions of numerous pornographic pictures, statistical studies, and psychological experiments. She privately publishes a full picture version of Dangerous Relationships, named Against Pornography: The Evidence of Harm.

Russell received her Ph.D. from Harvard in 1970, and is a Professor Emerita of Sociology at Mills College, Oakland, California.
