Book Description

November 14, 2004
Dangerous Religion is a "thought-opera" of spiritual contemplations on Neo-Pagan and environmental themes. It was also written to be a manual for environmental activists and other participants in the anti-globalization movement.

The book describes a planetary Will to Life expressed by everything in nature from animals and plants to the material elements. This concept of "Global Animism" requires radical transformations in our total lives, from the level of personal belief all the way to political and economic organization.

Three main sections distinguish particular themes. The first is called "In the beginning was the Mother" and is primarily concerned with environmental and religious matters, particularly in the Celtic world view.

The second section, called "Separating Reality from Illusion" examines social and political matters, especially how the global market is a manifestation of the Will to Life in pathological disorder.

The third and final section, "The Great Silence," brings the previous themes into a personal and more purely spiritual unity. It suggests some ways how the disordered Will to Life may be rectified and how we must act to do it.

About the Author

Brendan Myers was born on the fourth of July, in his family’s home in Canada. He studied philosophy and drama as an undergrad at the University of Guelph, in the city of Guelph, Ontario , as well as at Memorial University of Newfoundland, both in Canada.

Brendan is currently studying at the PhD level working as a research associate in the department of philosophy of the National University of Ireland, Galway, Republic of Ireland. He holds dual citizenship with both Canada, his native country and Ireland where his father was born. Currently living in Ireland, Brendan hopes to make Europe his permanent home.

While unorthodox spirituality is one of his main areas of philosophical interest, Brendan is also interested in social/political thought, civil disobedience, ethics, world mythology, and environmental philosophy. His keen interest in politics and social justice developed during his two year tenure as the president of Local 3913 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

He has had the good fortune to present his ideas before His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, as well as the Duke of Edinburgh, and in several good local pubs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenging book by a thoughtful author, May 19, 2005
This review is from: Dangerous Religion (Paperback)
This book should be compulsory reading for all those in the neo-Pagan movement. It should also be required reading for anyone doubting the very real commitment to change of those on the left. A refreshing anti-dote to both the right wing corporate media and the extreme hippie left (that sometimes characterizes the neo pagan movement), this book argues the case for change in our society.

A rich thought provoking text, stock full of concrete examples of the forces aligned against the environment, this book is both a call to action and a justification for that action in the protection of our existence. Yes it is that serious, but justifiably so. Dangerous Religion is a must for those who want to see a better "tomorrow."

Outlining the case for global animism and the protection of our environement, the book nourishes the neo pagan movements future growth. With serious authors such as Myers the future of neo paganism is in safe hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those serious about nature, November 13, 2006
By
Jennifer Gibson (Ottawa, ON, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dangerous Religion (Paperback)
Brendan Myers presents a compelling argument for joining those involved in the social and environmental activist movements, as well as taking a serious look at natural spirituality. Personal anecdotes mix with philosophical ideas throughout, including Myers' first hand account of the protest against the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, QC, Canada in April of 2001. Especially through this anecdote, he shows that not only does he talk the talk, he walks the walk. His down-to-earth discussion of natural spirituality, based on Celtic spirituality, melds with his discussion of environmentalism and personal responsibility.

This is not a fluff book, it is a philosophical discussion. Every human being should read it as it not only talks about how humans are and should be interacting with nature, but how we should respect each other and ourselves enough to hold ourselves to a higher standard of behaviour. For people following a natural spirituality, this book provides an invaluable step up from the run-of-the-mill Paganism 101 books.
