Buck and Tunes have always been best friends, even though Buck is white and Tunes is black. When Tunes' mom died when she was a baby, Buck's mom treated Tunes like her own little girl. It helps that Tunes' father works on the farm of Buck's parents. All that Buck and Tunes want is to be left alone to fish and find crabs near the water. Up until the summer they turn thirteen, that has been the case.

One day while out in Buck's boat, they find a body in the water. A friend of theirs, an older man with a family who works as a laborer on the farms nearby, is dead with his skull smashed and a bullet hole in his forehead. Tunes immediately jumps out of the boat and walks away; she doesn't want to have anything to do with this dead body. Buck tows it back to shore and tells the story of finding it, saying that Tunes was not with him at the time. He isn't sure why she doesn't want to be involved, but he will do his best to protect her.

Soon a horrible rumor is spread about Tunes, possibly in an attempt to divert attention away from their friend's killer. As things get more and more dangerous for Tunes, Buck's family backs farther and farther away from her. Buck is horrified. Could they really be so blind to the truth?

I liked that this story was truthful about racism. Bad and unfair things happened to Tunes because of her skin color, and this book didn't sugarcoat that fact. I liked that Buck continued to stand up for his friend, though, despite what others said about her. I was disappointed by the ending of the book.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was somewhat like a mystery and the characters were interesting. The book deals with the subject of prejudice which is something I don't agree with. I think Tunes and Kneebone were treated very unfairly and Tunes is never fully believed. Jumbo represents evil in the story while Buck and Tunes represent goodness. I was very surprised by the ending. I would recommend this book for readers between the ages of 11-14.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Hardcover)
The plot of the story is in the Chesapeake Bay.
It is around the 1700's at Virginia's eastern shore. The main characters are Buck and Tunes Smith. Buck's family used Tunes' dad (Kneebone) as a slave before she was born but was nice to him. Once Tunes was born Buck was born around the same time as she was. They became best friends until they found the dead body of one of theirs friends while they were out on the water some day in spring. Tunes ended up getting out of the boat since she saw the dead body. Buck pulled the body into shore and was questioned by the sheriff. Buck didn't want to get Tunes involved so he acted like she was never there when they found the dead body. Later in the story Buck told his dad the Tunes had been with him while on the water and his dad made him go back to Sheriff and tell him that Tunes was involved. They then convicted Tunes of the crime but there was a mean man that lived close to them. You will have to read the rest of the story to find out what happens next. I like this book because it was non stop action and there was a lot of friendship involved. This is one of the best books. I would give this book five out of five stars since it is fun and exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story about friendship, life, and changes., November 11, 2003
By
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Paperback)
Stunning. One of the top 10 books I have ever read. The author writes it so that you can feel the characters emotions. The ending of the story really touched me. I find it hard to read books about changes. I sort of want things to always be the same. "I'd also lost the notion there was magic in the world. I guess you could say I'd lost my childhood," is in my opinion one of the saddest parts of the book. Also, the part where Kneebone tells Buck that the good times are gone forever and that things would never be the same between the two, and the part that Buck says that Obie lost his heart for the Bay. I could go on forever talking about how great this book is. Its a moving book and I would recommend everyone who needs a good story to read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Skies, March 9, 2003
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Paperback)
Although this is the first novel I have read by Susan Fisher, it is categorized as one of the top 10 books I have read. She is able to generate the feelings of the characters within you and make you feel as if you were them. Here is an example from the book, " I snatched my hand out from under hers and flung myself into the farthest corner of the front seat. I looked out the window, all atwitch with nervous energy. As angry and frightened as I was, I felt as if pure adrenaline pumped through my veins." (p.112). The book shows an example of a heartbreaking friendship between two people from different worlds. Buck and Tunes, Buck being white and Tunes being black, having been raised since infancy, they take a tumble into the real world and find out that it its more than they assumed it was. This is a sad and very powerful story.
The initial message I was receiving from the book and its author was that if your in a realtionship of any kind, there will be someone to help you when u have lost all faith or need help. Even if you don't want help its not your choice, a good friend will help u no matter what. I would defiantly agree with this message because I have found that in my life when I needed help but I didn't want it, my friends still came through and helped me anyways. You may or may not agree with this theme depending on the type of relationship you have with friends. The reason why is because if you have a poor relationship with your friends, they may not be there to support you. So you may not be able to relate to the message of the author or agree with him. I know I certainly agree with her message.
I would recommend this book to others who are searching for a novel that will satisfy their needs for a great book. This book is not boring like other novels. I admire the way the book jumps to the climax within the second chapter of the book, it wont keep u waiting for the climax to arrive. So if you are looking for a exciting well written, heartbreaking book, this is the one you have been searching for your entire life. I would give this book a 9 out of 10, that is how much I cherish this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book written aboout friendship., April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Turtleback)
A great book written about friendship. Racism between the native American and an African American is the main point of this book.

The main character Buck is my favorite character in the book because the author "Suzzane Fisher Staples" created him as a clever and brave boy. Buck tried his best to help his friend Tunes, an African American, to get out of the trouble but he didn't make it. The reason was human racial prejudice. The racism between the black people and white people let Tunes get into the jail.

The book had a lot of funny and sad things happend. Including crime and human nature, let my emotion followed the characters up and down. When Buck and Tunes went fishing and hunting together, those setting had vivid in my mind. Although Tunes didn't kill anyone, she was accused by white men and put into jail, and the friendship between her and Buck was forceibly stopped. I could almost remember all the things happened in the book the story hooked me so much.

When I looked at the cover page of this book, I thought that is would be so boring, but when I stared reading the book, I felt really interesting and I loved it so much. I recommend it to all tenagerous who would like to read more aboout friendship and racism.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MYSTERYS OF GROWNIG., January 4, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Paperback)
The book is like a mystery. Buck and Tunes are best friends through out the story. In the book Tunes is blamed for a murder she didn't do. I think the book is boring in some parts. In other parts of the book it was excellent. The reason I gave this book five stars was the book was packed with action, betrayal, and emotion. I think the dialogue was a little boring but the rest was good. The bad guy in this story was Jumbo Rawlin. Jumbo Rawlin is a nasty character in the book. This book tells whats it's like to live near water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Skies the book that got me going, January 3, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Paperback)
I gave Dangerous Skies four stars because sometimes it doesn't have enough excitment, like when thier talking back and forth. The other parts are great, like when Buck had to find out who did the murder Rowlen or Tunes. It seems like sherif did it for a while, in my opinion. I think you will like the book Dangerous Skies because you can't put the book down, I started the book and I didn't want to stop. I haven't read any other boks bt Suzanne Staples.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dangerous Skies (Paperback)
I think the book Dangerous Skies is a pretty good book. I'd give it four stars because there was some good parts and some bad parts. My favorite charecter would probably be Buck because he kept on trying to prove Tunes wasn't guilty. At the start of the book I did not really get what the author was trying to tell me.
There were a couple of words and sentences that I could not understand. Is there going to be another book that says what happened to Tunes and Buck when they get older?
I recomend this book to people who like books that are adventures and sort of mysteries. I think this book is Like Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in a way or two.

Tunes and Buck have an undying friendship between eachother, that makes it a lot easier to trust eachother. But when something goes wrong and Tunes is their suspect,Tunes cannot trust anyone but herself.I liked this story because when I was reading I was really thinking and imagining what could possibly go wrong next.Everything Tunes and Buck do,Buck`s Dad always finds a way to make whatever Tunes and Buck do sound bad!He doesn`t and won`t let Tunes and Buck bearly ever play together, after all the happinings that had been going on.There had been quite a few with Tunes,Buck and a guy named Jumbo Rawlin. And a couple very sad
