I came from a strong, Evangelical Christian home. I wouldn't trade it for the world. My family wasn't perfect, but there was a lot of love and affection along with good, thorough learning of the Bible and what It really means, and most important, emphasis on the God of the Scriptures.

And except for not going to school dances, we didn't live with a lot of "do's and don'ts." To be honest, we had so many fish to fry with our church and Youth For Christ (Campus Life) activities, that I didn't miss dancing at all.

But unfortunately many of the Christian organizations I was exposed to were a totally different story. My father is an evangelist and we went to a lot of Bible Conferences as well many different churches and organizations, and there were times I thought I would never be able to keep up with the restrictions and artificial rules that some of these groups tried to promote as Biblical.

Donald Sloat, in his book THE DANGERS OF GROWING UP IN A CHRISTIAN HOME points this out accurately and well. Most of the examples show rules to live by that are either unbiblical or carried to an extreme that the Bible never intended. He is quick to show the extremes that people can go to, but he never once discredits real Christianity.

This book is guaranteed to make you think!

Whether you were brought up in a Christian home or are raising your own children in a Christian home, you must read this. As one who falls under both classifications, I found this book to be very freeing for my spiritual being. Many things the author addresses occurred in our home. I felt the author must have been watching from a closet in our home. He addressed such things as the lack of communication and dealing with the sinful man because a "Christian" doesn't speak, think, or act as such. The Christian home didn't speak of it, ignored it and hopefully it won't continue. This attitude leaves an open door for even more sin. I am seeking additional copies to purchase to give to family and friends. Please bring this book back into circulation.

I highly recommend this book to any Christian who aspires to raise (a) happy, healthy child(ren). Learn how to share your faith with your children in a way that gives them the best that your beliefs have to offer, rather than inadvertently instilling terror, self-hatred, anger, sadness and inhibition in your child.

This book is also useful for adults who grew up in homes where Christianity took a toxic form. It will help them to heal through understanding hurts inflicted in the name of religion, and will show a way to retain the positive aspects of Christianity while decrying its the misapplication.

Dr. Sloat was telling his story, but as I read, I felt like he was telling my story--and the realization that someone else knew how I felt was practically life-changing. This book should be required reading for anyone who grew up in legalistic Christianity or who wants to raise childen in a truly Christian way.

This is the only book that I know of that dares to suggest that parents misapplying Christianity can be dangerous to their kids. Some parents go through life thinking they can do no wrong to their kids as long as they are (or pretend to be) Christian with good intentions.

The author respects Christianity. It has its place. But many parents take things to the extreme and misuse religion in the home. Also, this book helped me see my parent's mistakes and how to not repeat them in my own family. Highly Recommend.

There are many positive benefits of growing up in a Christian family, but there can be negatives as well. Sloat shows how Christian parents can unwittingly force the truth on their children and cause them to act in ways that they have not willing chosen themselves. It's too bad this book is out of stock and maybe out of print, because I believe a lot of people will still buy it as they find out about it.

I haven't completely finished this book yet, but have read a good part of it and I am impressed. It takes a lot of things I've felt and puts it into words. Recommended reading for people who are burned out on people with religious or legalistic attitudes.

Donald Sloat doesn't just point out the many dangers of growing up in a strongly religious environment, he explains them in accessible terms, takes into account personality types, shows how important it is to become your own person and own your beliefs, and provides help in doing that - much of it related to his own experiences in growing up and in helping others. If you've been wounded by a religious upbringing, you may find significant help and healing in this book.
