Book Description

Studies in Liturgical Musicology September 6, 2000
Türk's book is the first to deal exclusively with the role of the organist in worship by concentrating on church music from the time of Bach up to the decline of thoroughbass. A unique source of information about church music practice, the improvisation of preludes, the role of the organ in relation to the liturgy, and thoroughbass, this book holds an important place in music history.

Margot Woolard provides appropriate annotation and interpretative commentary. An invaluable addition to the literature on liturgical music.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is, of course, a book for all church organists, and for those concerned with a better understanding of historical practice in church music, but it is much more than that; it belongs in the libraries of all who care about the present and future state of congregational singing. (Cross Accent )

This is a very readable translation, and it has been generously provided with notes and references. A facsimile of the German original was published in 1966, but the present volume is the first complete English translation. (Music & Letters )

Woolard demonstrates expansive knowledge of Baroque organ and church music practice and the writers contemporary to Türk...her notes guide the 'stranger' or 'beginner' with comfort...useful not only to performers, musicologists, and specialists in the history of organ playing and building, but to those who study liturgy, history of Christianity, and even German history in the eighteenth century. (Jeff Bach Religious Studies Review )
