Gr. 3-5. Two titles in the Everyday History series offer brief histories that recount how these everyday activities have evolved. Cooking a Meal deals with a variety of culinary matters, from mammoth hunters and Babylonian farmers to convenience foods and modern kitchens. Sending a Letter is a historical view of communication, from messengers and smoke signals to e-mail and faxes. Both books feature large print, numerous illustrations, and frequent sidebars that will pique browsers' interests. The writing style is clear, but there's some British bias in addresses, food brands, and a few other areas. Each book has a time line, a glossary, and a bibliography. Useful for report writers.
