Stortz work on Daniel is written from an historical pre-millennial position with a strong emphasis on pastoral concerns. For a pastor interested in preaching through the book of Daniel this a great book. Each chapter contains a wealth of sermon perpetration help. The exegetical portions of the book are somewhat light and I would recommend a more scholarly commentary be used alongside this work. The authors contention that the dream of chapter two is fully filled by Christ first coming is interesting, but not exegetically convincing based on the arguments he provides in the commentary.

Generally, the Preaching the Word Commentaries are some of my favorites. This one by Rodney Stortz was disappointing.

First off, I believe Rodney is a very godly man who loves his congregation and has been used greatly by God. I think his own trials and endurance through hardships are a great testimony to his faithfulness. If I had a chance to know him personally, I have no doubt that my respect for him would increase even more.

In the commentary though, he tends to allow his own trials and hardships to bear too much influence on his interpretation and application of the texts. For instance, his treatment of Daniel 3 (Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and the fiery furnace) misses the point of keeping steadfast faith and fidelity to God in the midst of governmental and peer pressure which jeopardized their lives. Stortz's application and illustrations, though, all deal with having faith that God will heal us from sickness or be with us even if we don't find healing. This really is a completely different subject. Even though his illustrations are very heartfelt, they miss the point of Daniel 3.

Additionally, Stortz tends to spend lots of time illustration or applying short phrases or comments made in the biblical text, and very little time commenting on the story's main points. His treatment of Daniel and the Lion's den in chapter 6 is a key example, where he spends nearly half his chapter on points such as "Daniel was Not Corrupt," "Daniel was Not Negligent," and "Daniel Prayed in Faith Toward Jerusalem."

Stortz also makes odd comparisons.

In the tradition of the Preaching the Word series, this commentary explains each text from Daniel in an insightful way with lots of great illustrations and application along the way. Great for pastor or teachers but also wonderful study helps for lay people who want to dig deeper into the Word. I highly recommend the whole series and this volume didn't disappoint.
