Book Description

5 and upK and up

Jesse's grandfathers have both passed away, but she'll never forget the magical summer she spends walking in the country with Daniel--her third grandfather.

Jesse knows her two grandfathers only through the stories her parents share. One died before she was born; the other lived long enough to visit her when she was a baby.

When Jesse and her parents spend two weeks in the country, she is drawn to Daniel, an old man who carries a walking stick. Together, Jesse and Daniel hike through the woods, cross streams, and ascend hills. When Jesse returns to the city with her parents, she has her own walking stick and vivid stories and sweet memories of the summer she spent with her third grandfather.

In soothing, lyrical language, Wendy McCormick offers young readers a satisfying, evocative story that pays tribute to the power of stories to create bonds of enduring love that transcend familial ties. Illustrator Constance R. Bergum's soft, delicate watercolors capture the gentle tone of the story and bring the endearing characters to life.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–This sweet, gentle book tells the story of how a young girl gains a grandfather. When Jesse's parents take her on a vacation to the country, she meets a friend of her deceased grandfather. With his green jacket and brown boots, Daniel looks like a tree. He teaches her lessons about nature as they take daily walks, and he never goes anywhere without his walking stick. When Jesse asks where he got it, Daniel tells her that the story can't be told "until just the right time." Needless to say, that time occurs before this heartfelt book's end. Written from a child's point of view, the narrative is believably tender and explores the special bond between the two. Bergum's transparent watercolor paintings are soft and colorful, and vividly portray the nature scenes. Pair this with Amy Hest's Rosie's Fishing Trip (Candlewick, 1994; o.p.) for a discussion on intergenerational relationships, and encourage individual reading so children may explore the beautiful illustrations.–Jessi Platt, Auburn Public Library, AL

This review is from: Daniel and His Walking Stick (Hardcover)
This wonderful cross-generational children's picture book encourages city kids to experience the great outdoors. The walking stick is an enticing prop that legitimates hiking as a special activity for children. The story shows that exploring nature is especially fun with a walking stick and someone knowledgeable to act as your guide, someone like Mr. Daniel Stockton in the story. This book would make a nice gift for a grandchild, niece, nephew, or friend's child aged 4-8. It recently won the 2006 Giverny Award for "best children's science picture book."
