Daniel Wallace is a comic book expert, sci-fi sage, and lifelong geek. Author or co-author of more than two dozen books including The Jedi Path, Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History, Iron Man Manual, Man of Steel: Inside the Legendary World of Superman, and the New York Times bestselling Star Wars: The New Essential Guide to Characters, his specialty is exploring the underpinnings of popular fictional universes.
Just released from HarperCollins is a book I spent a big chunk of 2015 writing. Warcraft: Behind the Dark Portal is the official behind-the-scenes "making of" book for 2016's Warcraft movie, directed by Duncan Jones.
This hardcover art book is actually a flip book! One side (above) covers the heroes, settings, costumes, and technology of the Alliance. Flip the book over to get the same treatment for the Horde.

Great news for two of my most recent books--both Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History and Time out Shortlist: Gotham and Metropolis are award winners!
Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History won a silver medal in the 2016 IPPYs, i.e. the Independent Publisher Book Awards. The book was ranked in the Pop Culture category, where it tied with Matthew Miller's Assassin’s Creed: The Complete Visual History and lost out to National Treasure. Nicolas Cage by Lindsay Gibb.&
Just released in April 2016, DK Publishing released Marvel's Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger, another entry in their outstanding series of superhero guidebooks. Matt Forbeck took the lead on this book, and I contributed along with Alan Cowsill.
It's 200 pages all about Cap, from his introduction in 1941 to his latest adventures in Marvel comics continuity. Marvel.com ran a solid overview of the book at this link: Get An Exclusive First Look at 'Marve
Released in February, Time Out Shortlist: Gotham and Metropolis is an interesting project that I wrote in collaboration with renowned travel publisher Time Out, as a tie-in to the movie Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, on behalf of corporate sponsor Turkish Airlines!
It's two guides, but they're packaged as a single flipbook: just flip over the Gotham side and you'll be ready to read Metropolis. This is 100% in-universe, meaning I scrupulously tried to avoid dropping in a
Scholastic released this book in January 2016 as part of their "Backstories" series of biographies of fictional characters. I really enjoyed writing Superman: The Man of Tomorrow because I've always wanted to have a book show up at a grade-school Scholastic book fair!
It's interesting to note that while the depiction of Superman on the cover is his "New 52" costume, I was instructed to adapt Geoff Johns' excellent Superman: Secret Origin when depi
In November 2015, Studio Fun/Readers Digest published Star Wars Droid Factory as part of "Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens." This is a make-a-model kit and I wrote the booklet that's included on the inside.
Here's the publisher's description:
Become a Star Wars droid expert and build your own BB-8, R2-D2, and C-3PO! Some roll on wheels, others walk on legs–some can even fly! They're droids, and in the Star Wars galaxy they can d
In November 2015, Thunder Bay Press published Marvel: The Avengers Paint-By-Number, a fun paint-by-numbers kit that comes with a 48-page booklet tracing the history of the Avengers from 1963 to today.
The five canvases feature Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America vs. Red Skull, and all four Avengers assembled together. They're inspired by classic comic book panels but the art conversion was done by my friend Joe Corroney.
Here's the publisher's descriptio
In October 2015, Insight Editions published Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History, the official making-of book for both Ghostbusters movies, the animated shows The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, the Ghostbusters video games, and more.
The publisher's description sums it up pretty well:
WHO YOU GONNA CALL? The Ghostbusters saga has been thrilling fans around the world for over three decades, from the original movies to the animated shows, co
In early October 2015, DK Publishing released Marvel's The Avengers Encyclopedia which I co-wrote with Matt Forbeck and Matthew Manning.
This hefty hardcover is 352 pages and covers all the Marvel characters who have been members of the Avengers or enemies of the Avengers, along with prominent supporting characters. As you can imagine, this includes a huge chunk of the Marvel Universe in general, though admittedly it's a little light on the X-Men side of things.
In August 2015, Studio Fun/Readers Digest published a puzzle book that I worked on: Star Wars Rebels: Super Solve It.
The book is recommended for an age range of 6-10 years and is about 100 pages. It has a variety of kid-friendly puzzles, like mazes:

...and other games like trivia, matching silhouettes, and more. From the publisher's description:

In May 2015, Insight Editions published two journals themed after Wonder Woman and Superman. These are mostly blank journals to be used for note-taking, but both of them feature a mini-short story on the first few pages that I wrote.
Each journal has an embossed cover and is roughly 200 pages. The Wonder Woman Journal opens up with Wonder Woman's recollections--and illustrations--concerning her recent battle with Cheetah in Washington DC.

In July of 2015, my book The Art of Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight came out. This 300-page hardcover from Abrams Books is the official art book for the Arkham video game series and chronicles how each game was made, featuring interviews with directors, animators, artists, composers, and more.
The real draw is the hundreds of pieces of rare artwork, which range from moody:
In February 2015 my book Star Wars Rebels: Sabine's Rebel Sketchbook came out. This is the in-universe journal of Sabine Wren from the animated TV series Star Wars Rebels, and is kind of a spiritual sequel to Star Wars: My Rebel Journal by Ezra Bridger.
Although I wrote the words for this one, the book is really carried by the amazing artwork of Annie Stoll. In the show Sabine is a Mandalorian saboteur but she really excels as an artist. Therefore we needed an artist of Annie's

The new DK reference book Ultimate Star Wars is out now! For Star Wars Day 2015 (May the Fourth Be With You) I toured bookstores in Indianapolis, Lexington KY, and Minneapolis with my co-author Adam Bray.
If you like Star Wars, you shouldn't miss Ultimate Star Wars. This is the first reference book to be published under the "new canon" established after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. It's a visually-rich encyclopedia to the characters, settings, and technology fo
Here's my schedule for Star Wars Celebration 2015! It's happening this weekend in Anaheim, CA, from Thursday April 16 through Sunday April 19.
I'll be on hand to promote DK's new release Ultimate Star Wars with my co-authors Tricia Barr, Adam Bray, and Ryder Windham. Ultimate Star Wars is a new hardcover reference encyclopedia covering the revised Star Wars canon, i.e. the six Star Wars films, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels.
My new Star Wars book, Star Wars Rebels: Rebel Journal by Ezra Bridger, is currently out in bookstores and online. This is the first project I've done in the animated world of Star Wars Rebels, and it's a spiritual cousin to my other in-universe, extra-sfuffed books like The Jedi Path, Iron Man Manual, and The World According to Spider-Man. This is Ezra's in-universe journal, collecting his thoughts beginning with his solitary life on Lothal and continuing through his earlies
My new book, Star Wars: The Imperial Handbook, is out now. This one is the Deluxe Edition, which comes with everything you see here! Like The Jedi Path, Book of Sith, and The Bounty Hunter Code, the Imperial Handbook is a manual providing an in-universe perspective on a faction of Star Wars characters. We've basically been wanting to do the Imperial version since the very beginning and I'm glad we finally got to do it!
Because it's a Deluxe Edition, it comes with extra
My newest book, DC Comics Super-Villains: The Complete Visual History, is out now!
This is a history of DC's greatest villains, from Lex Luthor and the Joker to Killer Frost and Captain Boomerang. I interviewed many writers, artists, and creators including Jim Lee, Dan Didio, Charles Soule, Mike Carlin, Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty, Fabian Nicieza, Ron Marz, Dan Jurgens, Marv Wolfman, and more. Kevin Smith wrote the foreword!
Here's a preview from Comicbook.com, and
