This review is from: Daniel in the Lion's Den (Audio CD)
We live in great times indeed when the Tuba has enough music to fill a solo disc Times were when the Tuba had to be satisfied with mediocre arrangements and solos written for its brethren, hoping at some point it would see itself basking in the light of specified commissions for it.Perantoni is a great player, has been around a while. I bought this CD just to hear his own unique sound trying to discover why he might change instruments to capture the sound, the timbre of a piece. Penderecki's Capriccio is a great piece; Written during the Solidarnosc times in Poland, the early Eighties, when the burgining movement was getting together. His Polish Requiem provides some material here for this solo. It is very propulsive, with great leaps into all the tuba's registers. High, it screams, bellowing like a harpooned whale, and the lower regions, the money-making part, thunders in darkness and roars. The smaller Eb Tuba makes for a lighter sound, yet not sacrificing the power of the piece. The fun pieces here (if you can call Mahler fun),Perantoni has an impeccable sound, sculptured almost, with just the right amount of darkness.Sweet Georgia is a nice piece suggesting the John Phillip Sousa times when this was done.
