WOW your cooking with Jack Black,
By Carole (Suwanee, Georgia (suburb of Atlanta) United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jack Daniel's Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook (Food & drink) (Hardcover)
I have been cooking with Jack Daniels Black Lable Whiskey for many years. Today I was sitting in the isle of a book store looking at cook books and ran upon this unknown book. After spending at least a half hour pouring over it I was impressed beyond words. I realized that my cooking with this whiskey had only touched the tip of the iceberg. The book is beautifully laid out and written; the range of recipes is great and the pictures and stories rich with the Tennessee heritage. Of course I put the book back on the shelf so I can purchase it here at Amazon since the savings is much better. But I can honestly declare you will be totally delighted with the book and the great eating you will gain.

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. It's full of beautiful pictures and really great recipes.
As you might expect, it has lots of recipes with the sponsor's product in it, and of course, they are really good. The chocolate velvet cake with Jack Black and the "tipsy sweet potatoes" are definite keepers. But so are the many recipes from Miss Bobo's boarding house. Miss Bobo did not allow spirits on the premises. One of my favorites that always draws raves is the artichoke, spinach, and mushroom casserole.

Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook,
This review is from: Jack Daniel's Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook (Food & drink) (Hardcover)
I always love a cookbook with photos! This one has some black and white and some color - as a novice cook I rely on pictures to help me decide if I am going to make the meal and if I have done it right. This book was sent to me by Thomas Nelson Publishers for review and I was up for the challenge. After trying a few recipes I glad I had. I do really wish the book had more pictures and a little less text but overall it is ok. The essays in the book are a nice treat and the categories are easy to follow and understand. Overall I am glad to have this book in my cupboard!

First of all - I really like Jack Daniel's. I am not a big drinker nor anything similar but enjoying a good drink after work is just relaxing.
I am also not a big chef still I like eating very much. So I got this Cookbook for birthday which gave me the enthusiasm to cook food by myself. It is not always easy but most of the time very tasty. Jack wins!

I received this cookbook from Thomas Nelson Publishing for free in return for a review. First of all, there was a mix-up in the ordering and they were very quick to remedy the situation - thanks Thomas Nelson! This is a cookbook which goes beyond just using Jack Daniels. There are many other southern delicious items to make. I am excited to make a lot of the sauces that do incorporate Jack Daniels especially come summer time when we have the grill out! Over all, a great book to just even look through! It gives a lot of the history too of the Tennessee area.

A Great Cookbook,
By Dina S. (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jack Daniel's Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook (Paperback)
As someone is who is severely allergic to gluten, wheat, eggs, chicken, beef, soy, and certain types of fish I am forced to change many of the ingredients to fit my diet. While I did enjoyed these recipes I can not say how they taste using the ingredients called for in the book as it has been years since I have tasted many of the ingredients. For example I always substitute flaxseed when eggs are called for in a recipe. A change such as this alters the flavor and texture of the recipe a great deal. That said I enjoy this cookbook and recommend it to those who love good southern cooking.

Tennessee is renowned for many things, most notably it's music, scenic beauty, walking horses and Jack Daniel's Whiskey. -Foreward
I was supposed to receive a free complimentary book, The Jack Daniel's Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook by Lynne Tolley and Pat Mitchamore from [...] for my reading and review. Unfortunately, I never received this book, even after contacting them about the problem, I never received a copy. I have read several reviews and this seems like a very nice cookbook if you enjoy cooking with whisky. There are beautiful color photographs that go along with many of the recipes, as well as essays. This is not only filled with recipes, but full of ideas, area folk history and Southern hospitality. This book will be a trip down memory lane for many of you. Several reviews have said that this book is very user friendly and is a must-have for a Southern home-cook. These recipes do take time to create, so this may not be the best book for a beginner. Not all of the recipes in the book require Jack Daniel's Whiskey. A few do ask for other alcoholic beverages and most of them require no alcohol at all. If you enjoy Southern food and recipes, this is the book for you. Enjoy!

Jack Daniel's Spirit Of Tennessee Cookbook
By Lynne Tolley and Pat Mitchamore Published by Thomas Nelson I am a passionate devotee of cookbooks. I have a whole bookcase devoted to them, in fact ! There was no doubt in my mind that I simply had to review a copy of Jack Daniel's Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook. This 192 page cookbook has superb black and white and colour photographs scattered throughout, but most of the book is - as it should be - devoted to wonderful recipes from Tennessee. The recipes cover a vast range from Drinks (these include non-alcoholic drinks) to Appetisers, Soups & Salads, Vegetables, Breads, Outdoor Cooking, Desserts, Cakes & Pies, and Accompaniments. They do NOT all include a shot of Jack Daniel's ! Outdoor Cooking is a true delight, covering how to set up a Pit Barbecue and some stunning recipes to make. I was a little surprised to find that the main chapter including meat recipes has been entitled Entrees; I would love to know whether this was deliberate and done to reflect a specific Southern tradition ? An Entree in the UK is more akin to a starter rather than a main course. The recipes are all clear, concise and easy to follow, and only a few would be difficult to make here in the UK due to the ingredients. I've not seen Hominy grits or Marshmallow crème in any local shops here, though I am sure it would be possible to get them via the Internet. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for really unusual recipes for a special occasion. Happy Cooking ! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their [...] book review bloggers program. I love cookbooks and when I heard that this one was coming out, I was eager to see it. Having spent some time in the South near Tennessee (military tour), I remembered so many of those great tasting meals I enjoyed at friend's homes. But to be honest, growing up a California girl, I wasn't very familiar with Southern style cooking.
Now I've got a way to learn how to make hush puppies (something completely new to me until I was stationed out there), pickled eggs, Farmhouse country fried steak, old-fashioned cold slaw, and many others. I was very excited to see a recipe for banana pancakes as I've been introduced to from the Jack Johnson song. Now I can actually make them. Just recently released, I have a beautiful cookbook with great tasting recipes to complete. From the makers of Jack Daniels comes a cookbook with all the right Southern tasting recipes. While some recipes contain Jack Daniels, there are many that do not. Many recipes contain stories about that recipe or something related to it. For example, a lady named Mary Ruth Hall who hosted a Boarding House back in 1949 created a recipe called Spaghetti and Beef Casserole. It goes into more detail. Very interesting. With this cookbook, you are guaranteed to not be disappointed. Not only that but this book is filled with amazing photographs too. If you like Tennessee style cooking, then you will be sure to enjoy this brand new cookbook. |
