This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
I am Jewish, and when I read this book, I found out the realistic happening of what could have been me in the Holocaust if my ancestors had not moved to America before this all started. Books like "The Devils Arithmatic" are very well written books but do not give the 411 on what really happned. For example, "The Devil's Arithmatic" skiped parts about Jews ging into a ghetto and they made the Jews not know who the Nazis were in 1942. By that date, everyone that was Jewish knew what was going on and would have probably been sent to a ghetto long before. This book, however, gives the true happening of the Holocaust, and shows what people lost that were so dear to them. I was almost in tears when I finished this book. My teacher at my middle school had a historical book report project she assigned. She reccomended "Daniel's Story" as her favorite book. My friend who sits next to me, is Hindu and read the book when she knew nothing about the Holocaust. She loved it and couldn't put it down. In conclusion, this book is one of my favorites and it was a great learning experience- even though I knew much about the Holocaust already. Please read it!

An Unforgettable Story...,
By Henry Enrique Marin (Brooklyn, NY, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
This is a truly unforgettable story about a 14-yr old boy named Daniel who lived through the Holocaust. Daniel, the main character, narrates this emotional story about his experience during World War II. From the time when he was taken away from his home in Frankfurt to the ghetto of Lodz in Poland, then to Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Through his journey he learns to fight for his life and never give up. ... This is a touching and memorable story that, as someone else said, it also encouraged me to learn more about the Holocaust. I highly recommend this book to anyone, any age. You will never forget it !

Daniel's Story,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
I highly recommend Daniel's Story to other 6th graders because it is really interesting . Daniel's Story is about a boys life as a Jew in Germany and what he has to do to get his freedom back and leave concentration camp . Daniel is treated bad because he is a Jewish. For example the paragraph below .
Daniel's Story has a sad introduction also when they were starting to be treated bad was because the Germans were looking for someone to blame for all of Germanys disasters so they picked the Jews and that's why everything happened and why they where treated so bad . Daniel's Story has a suspensful rasing action was when Daniel and his family where on the train it was really suspensfulbecause the author didn't revil where they were going it made me have to keep on turning the pages and reading to find out . The other one was that it had a revealing climax cause it said the truth about how they were being treated and also how they were being killed for no reason or just because they were Jewish . And also because it was saying how they were living and all they had to go through and that it was not fair but only that they had to do . So if you are looking for a good book that keeps you turning the pages you should read Daniel's Story . I also predict that you will love this book after you read it .

Daniel's sotry is a wonderful book. I know that many teens may think it's boring. But even those who don't like to red would enjoy this book. It has a very fairytale like ending that leaves you to think about the holocaust in general. This book was what got me reading holocaust books. If you enjoy history then you would love this book.

Carol Matas made me live Daniel's Story in my mind.,

This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
This novel was very upsetting to me because it tells a very real story about what the world was like during the Second World War in Europe, and the pain Jewish people went through because Adolf Hitler didn't like them. He used them as slaves to work in his factories for free. He kept them imprisoned in concentration camps, even though they didn't do anything wrong. First they had to get all their body hair chopped off with a knife, and the Nazis didn't care if they cut them. Then they all got shoved into a room and had buckets of strong disinfectant thrown on them. It really stung. The Nazis didn't care what happened to any of them. They just tortured the prisoners when they weren't working, and some just got shot anyways. Daniel was fourteen when the Nazis captured him. His father was in the same camp. His sister Erika was taken away, and neither Daniel or his Dad knew if she was dead or alive. They both vowed to survive so they could find out. That's what kept them going even when they were hurt or starved. By the time the war ended, Daniel had seen lots of people die and had horrible, horrible stories to tell. That's what makes his story so interesting. I hope that something like this will never happen again! I read this book in Grade 6, and I still think about it often. My sister is reading it for a book report this year. I recommend that when you read this book you carry a box of tissues with you.

The most powerful book of its kind,
By
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
I am a paraprofessional who works in a fifth grade class. In my spare time in the classroom I pick out books from the class library to read. I picked this book up yesterday and finished it today and can only say that I was overwhelmed. I have never read any other book in my entire life on this subject that allowed the reader to actually feel the horror, terror, and despair along with the determination and hope that Daniel shared in his writings. While the book is fiction, it personifies what happened in a way that I never imagined, even after having visited both Holocaust Museums. (in Washington,DC and in NYC) I have five granddaughters aged 9 through 16. I will make sure each of them reads this book.

Oh! I need to read this book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
Daniels story is about a Jewish boy living through world war II.This story's plot has a lot of action and builds suspense. It is also very emotional and teaches you how good your life is today. It has a great moral and I wish there was a sequel.
In this story there is a lot of action including the part when Daniel gets caught by the Nazis and taken to the death camp. It makes you worry and is definitely a page turner. But there are more parts in his story that build suspense. Like when Daniel goes into the fire pits to take pictures. Also in this story there are very emotional parts. Daniel falls in love with a girl named Rosa. I'm not going to ruin the story but some of Daniels family members pass away. This part is important because it teaches you how important your family is. Daniels story is great read and I really enjoyed reading this book. It has an excellent plot and the story it self has very good description and details which makes t really enjoyable. It makes you think and wonder and I know you will love this book.

Louis Abramowitz's review on Daniel's Story,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
Daniel's Story is about a boy who looks at pictures that he took at his home town in Frankfart, Germany. He did this to this to remember things he did there while in the ghetto, concentration, and death camps. It is very sad book because it is very detailed about the ghetto and all the camps. It describes what he went through and all the people he met. It talks about how he survived and what the camps were like. It is also very descriptive about face emtions and body language. If you like the review this book, it is for you.

Wonderful book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
The Holocaust affected almost everyone in Europe at the time. In my book, the Holocaust affect's Daniel's family, as well as his body and mind. I really enjoyed this book because it explored all of the aspects of the Holocaust. Add something right here like a quote or something!!!!!!!
Daniel's physical appearance was affected very badly in both the labor camps and the Ghetto of Lodz. During Daniel's time in Lodz he grew taller and thinner at the same time. Now, getting tall and thin in any other situation would have been a good thing but not for our Daniel. He and his family were aloud hardly any food so his stomach grew smaller and smaller. When he was transported to Auschwitz and Buchenwald, labor camps, it would make sense that his muscles would grow but exactly the opposite happened instead he grew weak and with weakness comes the capability to force your bones to burst forth from the skin and make you look almost disgusting. Daniel's mental perspective changed greatly during his time at the different camps and at Lodz. In the beginning of the story Daniel was a happy person with family members that cared and enjoyed having him around. One day the Chancellor of Deutschland, Adolph Hitler put a decree that all Jewish people must be put onto trains to go to somewhere else. Daniel's family was reluctant to go, but went in order to not be harmed. During this trip Daniel started to feel sad, for he was no longer with his favorite uncle peter. When he and his family arrived at Auschwitz, his mother and Erika were taken over to the weak side while he and his father were taken over to the strong side. Daniel became angered but did not try to fight for his mother. As soon as Daniel and his family were liberated, he felt overjoyed and extremely happy. Daniel lost many people in his family. He found out that he lost his mother, Erika, his uncles, aunts, and his Oma and Opa. As soon as he freed himself of sadness he went back to lodz and found his girlfriend and married her. If he couldn't find someone in his family he pretty much just considered them dead. And even though he was worried about his family he just didn't have the strength to look. Daniel's family was not the only family who was lost, almost evry family in Europe was affected including Aryan Germans. I hope you now understand how the Holocaust affected peoples thoughts, their appearance, and their relationships. I hope you will put this wonderful book on your reading list, for I thought it was a great story.

Daniel's Story,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Daniel's Story (Paperback)
Daniel's Story is a wonderful book. The story is about a 12 year old boy who is sent to a concentration camp with his family which consists of Erika (his sister), Mama, and Papa. The setting is in 1933 when Hitler hated the Jewish people.Daniel and and his family are taken on a terrifying trip. They were treated horribly. Since Hitler hated the Jewish people they did not get to take a shower and had to work all day and were only fed one meal a day. I liked reading this story because it has a personality in it, like you are not reading the story, but someone else is telling you the story in real life. I really enjoyed reading this book. |
