About the Author

Dr. Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and was one of the world's leading experts in applied linguistics. After obtaining his Ph.D. in French from Columbia University, he taught French Phonetics and Phonemics, and supervised the language laboratory at UCLA. He went on to become Professor of Romance Languages and Language Education, and Director of The Listening Center at Ohio State University; Professor of Education and Romance Languages at the State University of New York at Albany; and a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Heidelberg. Dr. Pimsleur was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), American Educational Research Association (AERA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and a founding member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). His many books and articles revolutionized theories of language learning and teaching. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed a new method that is based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory that he called Graduated Interval Recall. This program incorporates both of these principles to provide you with the most simple and effective learning method possible.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh, I so wish I could give this a better review., October 5, 2004

I've previously (and very successfully) learned Spanish using the Pimsleur CDs, so when I was planning a trip to Copenhagen to visit a friend, I was happy to get a hold of the Pimsleur Danish CDs.

Unfortunately, while the Pimsleur method is by far the most effective I've found for learning to speak a language (as opposed to reading it), the execution of the Pimsleur Danish is CD is substandard. The dialogues are not of the same quality of those used in the Spanish lessons, and the male speaker has a markedly Swedish, not Danish accent.

If you do try to use these to augment your Danish instruction, model your responses on the female speaker, not the male. My friend in Copenhagen is still teasing me about my Swedish accent.

One of my friends at work, who is married to a Dane, recommends Colloquial Danish as the best Danish instruction CD/book combo she's been able to find. That's where I'll be headed next...

4.0 out of 5 stars Even I can learn Danish..., November 16, 2004

I have tried many language learning programs, and this is the only one that has worked for me. You can listen to it during you commute, for about a week and a half, and not once need to look at a text book. Yet you still retain the new words and phrases. Pimsleurs goes over words you have already learned, and integrates them into the next lesson, so even if you have not mastered a lesson 100%, you can still move on the next lesson, learn new words, and strengthen your vocabulary from the previous lesson. I only wish there was a second edition of Pimsleurs Danish. This edition goes over very basic words and phrases, but there is a whole language out there, and this doesn't cover it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious way to learn Danish, March 14, 2005
By
This review is from: Danish (Compact) CD (Audio CD)
I moved to Denmark for work and wanted to learn the language. I'd heard good things about this method of language learning, but was really surprised at how bad it was. The tape always assumed that I was a male American, but I'm a female Scot! The phrases were drilled so much that I found my mind often wandering, and the accent of the speaker is quite different to what I hear in the region I live in. It also doesn't give you a feeling of having learnt what you need to be able to survive.

The saving feature is the amount of Danish that you hear. It gets you more used to hearing Danish, and learning where the words start and end.

I have swapped over to using "Colloquial Danish" and practicing with Danish friends.
