2.0 out of 5 stars Not for "ordinary" students
This book was revised in 1958 and is still reprinted without any revision.
Does it mean this is an excellent book? I don't think so. This not-inexpensive book might dispappoint many students of Danish, because

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for "ordinary" students, September 21, 2005
This review is from: Danish: An Elementary Grammar and Reader (Paperback)
This book was revised in 1958 and is still reprinted without any revision.
Does it mean this is an excellent book? I don't think so. This not-inexpensive book might dispappoint many students of Danish, because

1. There are no conversation sections except "special idioms" with a list of 10 greetings, 14 expressions of thanks, and 10 polite expressions.
2. There are no answers to the exercises and texts for compositions.
3. There are no Danish-English vocabulary lists.
4. There are no translations to the reading passages;three of them are from folklore, and the other 17 proses and 5 poems are from writers of the 19th and early 20th century. Only classic.
5. In the composition section, you must translate approximately 100-word passages about a lady who had her small black bag snatched by an approaching thief; Xerexes, who resolved to make war against the Greeks; a tiger and a gladiator in the arena and so on. It also contains 10 examination papers (from 1947 to 1951) at University of London and Cambridge University. If you should translate them, you can't judge whether they are correct or not. There are no model answers you can refer to!

This book may be good as a textbook for college students or as a reader for self-taught students who like to read literary work by consulting a dictionary.

Unusually clear explanations of grammar and usage. Many, many good exercise. Abundant practice reading texts. Highly recommended.
