2.0 out of 5 stars Run, not walk, to Davidson/Fisher edition, June 13, 2008

This review is from: The Danish History (Paperback)
This is the 19th century Oliver Elton translation of Saxo Grammaticus' 12th century Latin work "Gesta Danorum" as issued by Biblio Bazaar and, let me tell you, it does wonders as a sleep aid.

As many have noted, Saxo is what we're lucky Snorri wasn't. Saxo's work requires far more of an introduction than the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda (Marvel as Saxo turns Mímir into a satyr) and Saxo is notoriously dry (and even more fond of Christian moralizing), making this work difficult to get through on its own. Not only that, but what information that can be culled from Saxo under all of his Latin-worship, heathen-hating, and Frigg-bashing is painfully hindered by the poor editing of this edition of Elton's public domain translation.

If you can, I suggest you do yourself a favor and skip this version and go straight to the Davidson and Fisher edition:

Saxo Grammaticus: The History of the Danes, Books I-IX: I. English Text; II. Commentary

The translation is proficient, and the resulting prose is very readable. I would have preferred a dual language presentation, though. In its present form, I had trouble finding some references. All in all, though, a good effort.
