A Quality Boot, no doubts now, but Sizing is an Issue
on October 2, 2013
I normally wear a 10.5 4E or 11 EE. My right foot is about a half size smaller than my left. I had read reviews that these run a little small, so I ordered them in 11 Wide. They fit well in the left foot but the toe box was shorter on the right foot and really smashed my toes. It seems like I had maybe gotten a pair that quality control missed.
Amazon was great accepting the return.
Now for quality. While I didn't wear these boots out of the house, I can tell you that they seem very solidly built, in line with what I have come to expect from Danner. All stitching was neat and symmetrical, there were no flaws or defects I could detect from a thorough examination of the boots (apart from the smaller right boot).
I would recommend these as a boot, and am actually considering rolling the dice on another pair, but I am on the fence if I should try 11.5 Wide or 12 Wide. If I do order another pair, I will try to remember to update this review.
THREE DAYS LATER
I rolled the dice because I liked these boots so much and was so sad for the problems in the first pair I recieved. I ended up ordering the 12 Wide after a great deal of debate with myself.
These boots fit how they should. There is ample room in the toes, and when I jam my feet forward to test the size, I can get my finger behind the left and a finger plus a little on the right. This is what I would expect, and what I would normally find with a size 11. So for hiking boots, the 12 Wide is just right (and 11.5 Wide would have worked too).
So here is my advice, If you have wide feet, get the wide. Order one FULL size up from your normal shoe size and you should be pretty spot on in terms of fit. I am a 10.5 4E so I would normally get 10.5 4E or 11 E/EE. As these boots are not in 4E, I uses the latter as my plan. Added one size and I am just right.
And just a note, the traditional Danner Styled Boots (Rain Forest, Fprt Lewis, USMC RAT) follow my normal sizing, 11EE. From what my research turned up, it is the hiker styled danners that may require the upsizing for a proper fit.
Hope this was helpful!
