For a boot priced in this range, in my experience, there are few, maybe no real competitors on the field.

The only problem I have with these boots is that the middle part of the sole starts coming apart after year two.

I have been wearing Danner boots for ten years. Danner used to have a line of military boots, called Desert Eagles, which were near exact copies of the Pronghorn boot, except they were khaki. I and a friend took those boots on a world tour, from jungles to high altitude desserts, and our only wish was that tread would not have worn out before the uppers did.
Now I'm wearing the Pronghorn, and I find the same level of durability and comfort. My first pair of Pronghorns took an incredible beating in construction and mountain hiking, and they absolutely outperform any wannabe boots like Bates, Wolverine, Rocky, etc.

The tread/ sole is a bit on the knobby side, but grip is good. There is no significant difference in heigh between the heel of the sole and the foreword part of the sole, which makes for more stable walking on rough terrain.
The GoreTex works. The boots inner lining is a fabric that permits a sock of any fiber to slip into the boot easily, something you would not think of , until you have a boot liner that won't do this for you. This being said, the boot lacks a pull up tab in the back, and its something you'll miss.
Ankle support is very good, especially from a boot with nylon canvas in the uppers to give it breathability. The all nylon tongue is big part of its breathability and coolness, compared to an all leather upper.
There are a couple places in the uppers, on the outside step of each boot, basically, where the stitching can be abraded and the leather begin to separate from the nylon. This happens mostly around rocks and dirty equipment.

Size? I ordered my standard size, and this time around it did seem a bit looser. I put a thicker pair of insoles into my boots anyway, so, that filed it for me.

I recently purchased a pair of Danner Pronghorns. After reading the reviews about the boot here on Danner.com, i was skeptical, because their overall rating was 2 stars. I can only assume it received bad reviews because the boots customer's received were defective in some way (as can understandably happen from time to time with any mass produced product) or these customers had used the boot for a long time and not taken care of it.
I am more than pleased with my decision to try the Pronghorns, because they are the most comfortable shoes Ive ever put on my feet. the padding on the insole offers excellent support, and they fit perfectly. The 8 in height offers ankle stability, while (after break in) remaining flexible enough for tremendous comfort. The poor reviews concerning the boot were mostly related to its lack of waterproofing. I took it upon myself to test this specifically, and rigorously. After some heavy rain and moderate flooding, i wore the boots on a several short hikes through the swampy woods in my are of NJ, and to my surprise and satisfaction, they preformed tremendously well. Dry feet completely, even after several total submersion up to the height of my ankle and lower calf. The outsole is tough and durable offering superior traction in wet and slippery up and downhill hikes. Even in warmer weather ( i tested them on hike in 70 degree weather) the boots were breathable and comfortable enough for a long hike with the proper socks. The same goes for colder weather too. they kept my feet warm in the wet snow we just had (its been a crazy week for weather here). i find no drawbacks to the boot, and as an avid hiker and backpacker, who lives by the principal of using the best gear, i highly recommend the boot.

Picked these up last week at a local store. (Sorry Amazon) I am glad I did though. The boot is well made and very comfortable. Only thing I would mention to buyers picking them up online is go half a size bigger than you measure out to, these particular models run small. I went up half a size and they still fit snug. After a good bit of use in the last week they have stretched out and fit much better. As far as I could tell that is all the "breaking in" they need.

These are comfortable right out of the box. Materials and workmanship are good. The tread is also very good but they are not Vibram. The tongue design is not good at all. The tongue is level with he top of the boot instead of extending above the top of the boot. The top lace wants to jump off. The web between the boot and the tongue only extends about one-third the way up the boot. Water deeper than that and the boot will flood. It also makes it difficult to lace the boot. The tongue doesn't lay properly and has to be tucked in as the boot is laced. The leather patch on the tongue keeps the tongue from laying flat and it bulges with the laces. The eyelets and lacing system are excellent. And these are the best boot laces I have seen. I didn't even replace them with paracord. I consider these decent light duty boots but wouldn't wear them backpacking. The waterproofing is adequate except for the tongue issue. They are dry in a heavy dew or a light rain. I wouldn't ford a creek in them. Still, I like these boots and i wear them quite a bit. They are comfortable like my Danner TFX desert boots. I am on my second pair of those. They are excellent boots but not waterproof.
