Editorial Reviews

In a small English town, a widowed father and his son own and operate a gas station that rests on land coveted by a local developer. They must fight to keep their land and retain the traditional values they have come to live by against harsh government inspectors who are privately in league with the developer. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl. Danny, the Champion of the World is set in rural England. Nasty country squire Cyril Cusack, who owns half the land, covets the other half. His principal opponents are a father-and-son team of farmers. The warm relationship between the two "good guys" hardly needs to be forced, since the roles are played by Jeremy Irons and his real-life son Samuel. Robbie Coltrane and Jean Marsh also appear in this colorful comedy-drama. Produced for British television, Danny, the Champion of the World was based on a story by Roald Dahl. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide This is one of the most delightful of the many adaptations of Roald Dahl stories. It stars Jeremy Irons, with his own son Samuel playing his film son, and Samuel's grandfather Cyril Cusack also in the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Danny the Champion of the World, August 12, 2003

This review is from: Danny Champion on the World [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the most delightful of the many adaptations of Roald Dahl stories. It stars Jeremy Irons, with his own son Samuel playing his film son, and Samuel's grandfather Cyril Cusack also in the film.

The story is about poaching; although the original book suggests whole hearted approval for this, the film shifts the emphasis more to a general conservation theme, and in so doing, really improves on the book.

Beautifully filmed and superbly acted, this one is a treat. It is criminal that it is not available on DVD - though it has been released on DVD in the UK, and it may be possible to track a copy down.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Roald Dahl's best stories for kids, May 26, 2005
This review is from: Danny Champion on the World [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Not only is this story one of Dahl's best for kids, this video has great actors like Jeremy Irons in it. Not your usual kids' video, this is a story for all the family to enjoy. I hope someone makes a dvd copy of it soon!!

We watched this movie just this weekend, with our three teenagers, who were enthralled. Great for all ages!
