4.0 out of 5 stars Danny Helped Me Learn to Read
I first reviewed Syd Hoff's "Danny and the Dinosaur" as a seven year-old. In second grade, we called it a book report, but my feelings on the book haven't changed. Danny's adventure includes a visit to the ballpark, which still has me smiling. Also, like hiding an elephant, Danny discovers playing hide-and-seek with a dinosaur can be difficult.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly entertaining.... just beware....
I got this book for my almost three year old to introduce him to something outside the simple boardbook genre... You can only ready Jamberry and the Eric Carle books so many times before your brains begins to turn to mush... Anyways, my son thinks the book is fun and requests to read it at least 4 times a week, which is a good sign.

I think most parents will...

4.0 out of 5 stars Danny Helped Me Learn to Read, September 30, 2004
This review is from: Danny and the Dinosaur (Paperback)
I first reviewed Syd Hoff's "Danny and the Dinosaur" as a seven year-old. In second grade, we called it a book report, but my feelings on the book haven't changed. Danny's adventure includes a visit to the ballpark, which still has me smiling. Also, like hiding an elephant, Danny discovers playing hide-and-seek with a dinosaur can be difficult.

While the writing and drawings aren't on par with "Make for Ducklings," or "Mike Milligan and the Steam Shovel," it capably compares to H. A. Rey's "Curious George" series. "Clifford, the Big Red Dog" readers will connect with Danny playing with an oversized lizard.

The text is simple, and the story is sweet, unencumbered by the intentional messaging found in many modern children's books. It is just a fun, silly story. It helped me learn to read and to love books. Maybe Danny's tale can help your son or daughter read too.

I fully recommend "Danny and the Dinosaur" by Syd Hoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book kids and parents will both enjoy..., February 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Danny and the Dinosaur (Paperback)
A boy meets a dinosaur in a museum and the dinosaur follows him home for a visit. This fantasy appeals to a child's desire to befriend the creatures that fascinate them. It's a gentle story, with no sad or scary parts. The dinosaur and the boy do "cool" things together, but also treat one another, and others, kindly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody wants a Pet Dinosaur, Don't They?, May 3, 2005
This review is from: Danny and the Dinosaur (Paperback)
One day Danny went to the museum, where he saw Indians, Bears and Eskimos, guns, swords and dinosaurs. Danny loves dinosaurs and wishes he had one and all of a sudden he does. At first he believes the dinosaur he sees isn't real, but it is. The dinosaur lowers his head, Danny climbs on and they are off on an adventure. As they stroll through the city the dinosaur thinks the buildings are rocks, but Danny sets him straight. They surprise a policeman by stopping at a red light. They help people across the street, even carry and old woman's bags. However, as the story draws to a close, Danny realizes he can't keep the Dinosaur and so his new friend goes off alone into the sunset.

This is a book for beginning readers. The words are simple, grammar too. It's a cute little story, guaranteed to keep your toddler interested, so much better than the "See Spot Run" kind of early readers. If you want your child reading before Kindergarten, and I do, then this book and books like it are very good additions to your toddlers reading arsenal.

This is one of the books we find him "reading" on his own. This is one of the most requested books he has (out of hundreds). It's a great read-aloud book because there's enough room to point out the words while your kid is pointing at the pictures. The whole Danny series is great, in fact.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book and tape review, March 19, 2002
By A Customer
There are plenty of reviews of this book, I want to give my thoughts on the book and tape package available. There is a nice introduction and conclusion offered by the narrator and one side has page turn signals, while the other does not. While this is an unabridged recording, the narrator actually adds words on page 18, which may confuse the child trying to follow along in the book. Also, sometimes the narrator's child voices come across as whiney and nasal. However, all things considered, I feel this is a worthwhile purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST have, October 27, 1999

This review is from: Danny and the Dinosaur (Paperback)
I am a 28 year old mother of one. I remember reading Danny and the Dinosour when I was a child. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed this book so much, that as a child, I memorized it, word for word, and then I would recite it back, without missing a word. I can't wait for my daughter to read this book, and I plan on purchasing it for her now, even though she is only 8 months old.

5.0 out of 5 stars NEPHEW LOVES IT, November 12, 2004
This review is from: Danny and the Dinosaur (Paperback)
I bought this book for my nephew Wyatt who is in second grade and he loves this book. He must have read this book millions of times over. I loved this book as a kid and I think that it has helped him take an interest in reading. The story is great, I love the illustrations and I think that the dinosaur is COOL and CUTE. A timeless classic. I love Danny and the Dinosaur GOES TO CAMP and the birthday book. I have read a lot of SYD HOFF books when I was a kid. THEY'RE GREAT.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift!, December 1, 2000
This review is from: Danny and the Dinosaur (Paperback)
When I was about eight years old, I had the pleasure of meeting Syd Hoff at my elementary school. He autographed my copy of "Danny and the Dinosaur" and I was so very happy! About fourteen years later, I still remember this book fondly. As I shop for a gift for an expecting friend, I feel confidant purchasing this book and knowing it will be loved by both mother and child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun, February 22, 2006

Danny and the Dinosaur is a delightful tale of imagination and good-humored fun. Danny visits a museum where he meets a dinosaur looking for a little bit of fun after 100 million years of just hanging around. They go and have a great time playing in the city. No one is hurt or placed in danger, and everyone has a good time.

I pulled out my old copy of Danny and the Dinosaur for my 3 year-old son the other day after I came across it by happenstance in an old box. My son fell in love with it, just as I did at his age. We read it so much that it fell apart by the end of the week. I replaced it with this version, which is just as handsome as the 1974 version I originally used. It remains one of my son's favorites still, even after a month. This is a great book for a toddler with a good imagination as well as an outstanding book for beginning readers.
