Editorial Reviews

After his breakout success in the forties, and stints at an array of the major studios, Danny Kaye came to call Paramount Pictures home for much of the fifties. It was there that Kaye created some of his most memorable screen portrayals, as evidenced by the pair found in this collection (both of which enjoyed contributions from Kaye's songstress spouse, Sylvia Fine). The epic comic fantasy The Court Jester (1955) sees Kaye playing a fool who gets embroiled in a plot to overthrow a tyrant king. Thanks to the amazing all-star cast (including Angela Lansbury and Basil Rathbone), a score courtesy of Sylvia Fine and Sammy Cahn, and creators Norman Panama and Melvin Frank (and Kaye's considerable talents), The Court Jester is rightly considered a cinema classic. In The Five Pennies (1959), Kaye pairs up with Satchmo himself, the astonishing Louis Armstrong to bring the tale of Jazzman Red Nichols to life alongside a bevy of Big Band greats. Tuesday Weld makes her screen debut, too!

We are movie collectors and were happy to find Danny Kaye's Court Jester on DVD at a reasonable price. The fact it is a double feature was just a bonus. It came very quickly.

The Court Jester is a great movie, and Danny Kaye's performance is spectacular as he shifts between a bumbling, good-hearted jester and a dashing, confident swordsman.

This is one of Danny Kaye's best, I've been laughing with "The Court Jester" since the first time I saw it as a little girl. I had the VHS version and now this one. I am now a PROUD GRANNY and I cannot stop laughing every time I see it; I love Basil Rathbone in this movie. "The Five Pennies" is a classic, also part of my youth. The duet of Danny with Louis Armstrong singing "When the saints go marching in" is unforgettable. If you like Danny Kaye and haven't seen them, don't miss them.

I bought this DVD to get "The Five Pennies". I remember watching that movie with my mother on a black and white TV. I loved the film back then and could still recall many of the scenes. I used to own this on VHS, and stored it with my other tapes in a cabinet. Strangely, ants were attracted to the tape and made a nest inside the VHS and ate away at the outside sleeve. So the tape was ruined. I'm glad I could find this on DVD, and if I bought both movies separately here on Amazon, it would cost me over $100.00. So this DVD at $29.95 was a bargain, indeed.

In "The Five Pennies", Danny plays Red Nichols, a talented jazz cornet player who starts his own band, Red Nichols and The Five Pennies. Fresh from Ogden, Utah, Red sets out for New York City to conquer the music world. He meets Bobbie, a showgirl and singer who thinks Red is nothing but a hick. She gets him drunk on the Prohibition "Tea" served at the club, but after he shows what a great horn player he is, they fall in love and marry. They have a daughter, Dorothy, who loves being part of her father's band, although Bobbie is not too thrilled. Dorothy ends up contracting polio, forcing Red to retire from touring with the band and settling down in Los Angeles. He gave up his music to devote his life to caring for his stricken daughter. Once Dorothy is older and finds out what happened, she and Bobbie encourage Red to pick up his music career where he left off.

This features a fine cast. Barbara Bel Geddes (of "Dallas" fame) has a beautiful singing voice and is wonderful as Bobbie. She is the calm in the Red Nichols storm; Danny Kaye is superb as the outgoing, wild Red Nichols. While Danny pretended to play the cornet, the real Red Nichols actually dubbed the playing in this film.

I enjoy THE COURT JESTER, because it's funny and adventurous, this film was different than watching Disney's SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959) because both films were made in the 1950s. Now THE FIVE PENNIES was made in 1959 and PARAMOUNT PICTURES wanted to produce Alfred Hitchcock's film NORTH BY NORTHWEST, but that film right went to MGM and became a hit but not for PARAMOUNT. So PARAMOUNT made this 1959 drama classic THE FIVE PENNIES, this tells the story about one man of the jazz age who goes on to become a great jazz singer in decades before having family problems in San Francisco. Remember one actress and some of the settings were used in Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO (1958).

What a joy to rediscover these all time family favourites - particularly "The Court Jester".
"The flagon with the dragon" or "The vessel with the pestle" etc - wonderful.

Swift delivery and nice packaging.
