Dated but still a gem,

This review is from: The Danube: A River Guide (Paperback)
If you're thinking of making the trip, this book will convince you to do it. Things may have changed in the 20 years since the book was written, but the history and the lure of the river hasn't. Kilometer by kilometer, Rob Heikell writes about the history, people, and navigating the river.

This review is from: The Danube: A River Guide (Paperback)
What may not be obvious without the book in hand, is that it was intended for the (British) boat enthusiast as an anchorage and journey companion. Its early date, compared to today's rapid changes, diminishes its current value. Unlike the guides for cyclists, hikers and other river tourists (who will all enjoy Eames' recent "Blue River, Black Sea") this book makes no attempt at historical depth or panoramic sweep. Still, for its narrow purpose, it may be useful for its intended audience.
